<![CDATA[Is verse 17:31 about Abortion ?]]>Salamun alaykum

Recently I had an online discussion with some muslims about "abortion" , and I was told that The Indonesian Council of Ulama has given a ruling regarding the permissibilty of abortion in Islam . The Council 'allegedly' ruled that abortion is a Ok provided the pregnancy is is under 40 days old . I was shocked , as a lot of medical experts say that life begins at conception i.e when the ovum is fertilized by the sperm ( ? ) , so I showed them this verse

" And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We give them sustenance and yourselves (too); surely to kill them is a great wrong " ( 1731 ) .

Is this the relevant verse to use for a ruling on Abortion ? Please comment and add other verses if possible .

Saying (do not kill your children for fear of poverty), and take it for born children, would imply that it's OK to kill them for other reasons.

As for life in a fertilized egg, well it's not more than life in any cells sperms, ovums, nails, hair, fat (would liposuction or tubian ligation be considered as killing a life?).

I personally am against abortion for no life threatening reason (again, different from murder), but can't find a no no against abortion in the qur'aan other than this, nor would consider abortion as murder.
