Should we be doing righeous deeds to win brownie points to heaven??

The God is not an object sitting there waiting to reward and punish you. The God is the bodiless intelligence that created this universe with LAWS. When you work with the laws you achieve inner peace, when you don you feel the "fire".

Or should we be doing righteous deeds because God simply told us to??

Who told you to? When? Where? How do you prove so?

Or should we be doing righteous deeds so we can UNDERSTAND that it is the ONLY way for our spritiual and physcial growth and betterment in this life and thus leading to a final state called HEAVEN

We do it because it is the way towards PEACE, where nothing can disturb us and make us emotional(thus destroying our health).

As sister Elena correctly stated

But ALL OF THIS starts with your THOUGHTS(adam) and images(his wife) that we entertain constantly.

What will the prophet Joseph say about your thoughts and visions?

1529 And your Lord said to the Angels "I am creating a human from a hardened clay."
1530 "So when I perfect him, and blow of My spirit in him, you shall submit to him."
1531 Thus, all of the Angels submitted.

Thats why we feel right from our hearts.
And yes, He expects us to be good.

I don't agree with this simple fact being we cannot disappoint our creator as He is self-sufficient and in no need of our pleasuring. We are only here to do goodness for our own benefit to save our souls.

Ofcourse, i agree He is self-sufficent and doesnt need us to feel better. but yeah, He does have expectations from us. we are His most prided creations.

i think righteousness would make sense if u consider the following

• its the right thing to, and we all know it from our hearts.

I believe this also because God has given us a natural instinct to know what is right and wrong like for example child murder or any murder in fact.

• we can't get away doing wrong becoz we are answerable to God for all we do , and face it -He expects us to be righteous. we are His most prided creations. Now, its not nice to dissapoint our creator, is it? )

Well I also think that all 3 alternative is valid.

God has created us with a big brain and then we are suppose to use that brain to do something noble with it.

There are many people who ruin their brain with different kinds of drugs so they can't think straight and their lives turns out to be miserable.

We who have the gift of being righteous and have the faith in God and the last day must indeed see the valid point to act in a righteous way throughout our lives.

And as for heaven and hell, they are destinations and not the actual journey.
The choices we make in our lives will take us to our rightful destination.so, we need to focus on our choices and live our lives as honest as we can to our conscience. we will do the right thing, Insha Allah. )

M_mehdi i was just thinkin in my head about good and bad and why we got to do good in this world and for what intention. Marie I also think the 3rd option makes more sense to me as the 1st option seems selfish and the 2nd option just makes me feel personally like an animal as I'm blindly following something without wisdom that God has provided us human beings, to think and reason with to understand why we need to estabilish righteousness.

You raised a good question, the third proposal makes sense for me because our decision for doing good deeds is based on wisdon and reason. I'd like to add one do good also to seek the God's Approval.
I agree with you about the first point wink the motivations are not the same ones.

The only reason anyone would take part in the transaction would be becuase they sincerely believe that it works.

Number one could be getting what you work for. You get good in return for good and bad in return for bad. Any whose weight of good is heavier will get the good. Beforehand they will be thinking 'If only the bad were not there'.
