I take this symbolically. It is something that always happens, not some epidemic that will happen once. If we take it as some epidemic, the people 1400 years ago never saw this fulfilled so it was USELESS to them, and the God's message is never useless, none of it.

The sun repersents your WILL, the day time is your consciousness, the nightime is the subconcious, the earth is man. The smoke will block out all of the heavenly bodies(lights), meaning we will be blind in regards to our will (sun), so we will just be followers and not LEADERS. The wicked will be in control while mankind will be in a fog, helpless. I see this day clearly right now.

"...and darkness shall cover the earth...."

In my opinion the chastisement of dukhan/smoke/hunger, is one where God straitens what men believe they lord over . He, God, gives life , that is, whatever you need to be maintained physically, mentally, on whatever level. He also gives death , the cessation of these things.
