There are articles on this forum and on free-minds that say the reading must be recited (and understood) during Sala but what if someone doesn't know Arabic? Can such people read a translation of the reading during their Sala even though no translation comes from the deity? It seems unreasonable to me that the deity would want some of Its servants to say things in their Sala that they don't understand. In fact, the deity wants us to know exactly what we're saying (443). Could 443 mean that every muslim must learn Arabic?

Being able to recite or read something is different to undrstanding or following something.

Of course, the most important thing is understanding and following, but learning Arabic is an advantage if you wish to study The Quran.

443 does imply one must know what they say, so if you recite Arabic yet dont know what it means, then this is not following what this verse says.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

So should every muslim learn Arabic or recite a translation of the reading while performing Sala?

          Peace everyone,

A lot of us spend time and energy going to school and studying a foreign language like Spanish, English, etc. to learn different subjects so we can get a good career and are successful in this life. Why can't we do the same to learn Arabic so we can study and learn God's message upon which the success of this life and the hereafter really depends? When you do not understand God's message and are relying on other's translations and interpretations then not only you are going against 443 but 1736 too.

443 O you who believe, do not approach the communion while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying.

1736 And do not uphold what you have no knowledge of. For the hearing, eyesight, and mind, all these you are responsible for.

You don't have real knowledge of anything unless you verify it for yourself. How can you know whether God is really saying something by reading translations and interpretations when you don't know Arabic? How will you able to verify the "hadeeth" of other's translations and interpretations?

God knows our intentions and sincerety and will judge us accordingly, as long as we slowly keep learning Arabic and keep making an effort to really understand God's message even if we make any mistakes in the meantime because of our imperfect knowledge of Arabic. The "salaat"/connection is what enables us to do that in a regular manner. "Prayers" alone don't )

As per the reading, Arabic skills are unnecessary

4144 Had We made it a non-Arabic compilation, they would have said, "If only its signs were made clear!" Non-Arabic and Arabic, say, "For those who acknowledge, it is a guide and healing. As for those who reject, there is deafness in their ears, and they are blind to it. These will be called from a place far away."

It is the following verse which makes me wonder if muslims need to be able to recite some Arabic

1778 You shall hold the contact prayer at the setting of the sun, until the darkness of the night; and the Quran at dawn, the Quran at dawn has been witnessed.

The Quran (reading/recitation) at dawn is witnessed, but the real recitation is in Arabic only, which is why I'm not sure if one can recite a translation of the reading instead of the real reading. Maybe the answer's perfectly clear and I just need sleep.

              Peace be upon you,

Gods book is the universe..enlightened men and women have given us many writings in many languages to point us to the great universe. Dont worry about language, it is the message that we need.

Salaam... very good point. I remember always worrying about praying in arabic.. but God always talks about knowledge and understanding. He sent down the Qu'ran in Arabic so the people at the time could understand but that doesn't mean that we can't understand it either. Insha'Allah I will start to learn arabic but I'm in no rush, no matter what language when I pray, It's still to God and that's all that matters )
