I believe that even though the quran was mentioned over 1400 yrs ago, it is relevant today as it will always be relevant. Every single verse without any abrogation. Let's not be like the Sunnis who abrogate one verse with another and think that the quran is full of contradictions. The overwhelming majority of women on this earth do not work and that's just a basic statistic. Of the ones that do work, the overwhelming majority earn significantly less than their husbands. In America today, a woman working the same exact job position as a man makes 76 cents to every 1 dollar that her male counterpart makes. In many many other countries, the woman works only to supplement her husband's income. The playing field, my brother, is by no means equal. That's why the inheritance verse along with the verse of the husband supporting the wife financially is still very much relevant. It is my prediction (and this is according to my quranic beliefs) that women will NEVER be equal to men in any society, I don't care how liberal it appears to be on it's surface. The quran has, therefore evened out the playing field by requiring a man to support his wife, daughter, sister. But as Bro Layth stated, requiring a man to work, always provide for the women in his life, AND get the same amount as his sister would tip the scale to the other side this time. Quranic laws create the perfect balance so that both male and female are equally taken care of.

well, seeing the argument you used above (which is truth unfortunately) my reaction would have been exactly the contrary. it's like saying, well she already doesn't have much, lets not give her more. Lets stick to reality - husbands should support wifes, why not, and vice versa sometimes. But why should a woman have no financial choice than to stick to an even abusive husband because her parents leave two third of inheritance to the male descendants ? Imo this verse was up to date when it was revealed/inspired. But not any more - and that's why there is the possibility of leaving a different will.peace lk

Women have only been subordinate in the western culture. Which has now spread around the world thanks to Islam and then later imperialism.
There were, and still are, cultures where women are considered "superior" to men (feminists' dream lands). There's a tribe in Kenya where women pick their husbands. Men are not allowed to ask a woman out. They have no say. They've been having problems lately because "modernized" men (wearing shirts and pants and all) started picking their wives.
So the quran (or at least this interpretation/translation) would work if the quran was meant to be only for western civilization. In the future, some of these cultures may become prominent. Or feminists might actually be taken seriously. Who knows? -

You should doubt all teachings(quran) until you verify them..that is how you discern false teachings(quran) from God's teachings(quran).
....they say "bring me a quran other than this"...

thanks layth for the clarification.
the reason why i held on to the quran and treated it as a whole is because at times, i feel like i understand and feel "with the quran"(reading it with free will), those good old days i felt i had absolute intellectual and spiritual freedom but as i am getting more preoccupied with school i feel like my brain is getting smaller and smaller, i can't understand the quran with the intellectual insight as i used to. but at other times, i am a skeptic and i feel like i am forcing myself to read the quran. during the summer, i felt closer to god than ever before, because i regularly posted on this site, i asked a lot of questions and got a lot of feedbacks, i read the quran a lot and was able to derive my own understanding and going one step further on how i should apply it to my own life. but as time goes on i am going away form the quran... further and further... i am postly preoccupied with school, my internal life turned bitter and i quit this site for ten days.
another question i have
"god doesn't advocate lewdness" please clarify how do i avoid "lewdness" according to the quran?how do you "become" a believer? and how are you sure you are a believer and how do you "hold on to your hats"? i apologize but at this point of my life, once you are a believer, how do you avoid "disbelief" i am in so much doubt, it needs to be clarified. thanks for listening.

I have absolutely no doubt about the Quran being from GOd, it has continually amazed me, I remember telling myself over and over this is Gods words not mans, i would even try to not read it for awhile or read it when i was in a doubting mood and it would continually speak directly to my soul.
Mark me down as a true believer please, however cliched that may sound.

I completely feel the same way! group. Everytime I read the Quran which is more than a surah or two a night, I feel so overjoyed and my eyes filled with tears of humbleness, and my heart full of love, as I have no doubt at all, that god created this Quran. And it is most miraculous to witness how when you continue to read, how gradually over time, (even that I have read the Quran in its entirety more than 8 times), it becomes clearer and clearer, and reveals to me new awareness. I am a true believer too, suphanallah, god is great!!!!
But rifat, I understand how sometimes when you read, you feel there is a sense of unfairness, but as you continue to read, the truth is revealed,and you will see the reasons as well as the true intentions that at first taken alone, seem unfair, but never really are, as God created man and women in equality. And we all bow down to him.

Even such a culture exists in the Padang tribe of Indonesia in which the women's families are the ones who are supposed to 'buy' the men for marriage. I know a Padang woman who has been trying to save money all her life in order to propose to her well-educated boyfriend. I heard the higher the education of the man, the higher also the 'price' his family puts on him. Funny huh D.

One of my thoughts is that the Quran defines the attributes of a believer (see 22-25). Here is the translation that I am comfortable with22 This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous / those who guard themselves from sin,
23 Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and out of what we have bestowed on them, expend in the cause of God
24 And they believe in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed before you, and with regard to the Hereafter, they are absolutely certain.
25 These are guided by their Lord; these are the winners.To me, the most important word is "lilmuttaqeena" (righteous/ guard against sin / fear of God).
Here is an excerpt from Lane's Lexicon (pp. 309-310) that I find most relevant for the rot of this word (Ta-Qaf-Ya "taqwa"
"the preservation, or guarding, of one self, accord. to some, exceedingly, or extraordinarily, from sin, either of commission or of omission; or the preservation, or guarding, of one self from punishment in the world to come, and from acts of disobedience, by righteous conduct; or righteousness, virtue, justice or honesty."The KEY words to me in Lane's definition are "EXCEEDINGLY, OR EXTRAORDINARILY"
I constantly evaluate my choices and actions - I evaluate them from different perspectives, I spend time trying to understand the consequences and ramifications of what I do - and as a result, am often judged by others as "thinking too much" or "over-analyzing". It took me many years to decide that I WANT to spend the time and thought to do this - and that simply because MOST people do NOT choose to do so, that this does not need to deter me or make me doubt that this is a good thing. I find that as a result, I am able to articulate my understanding of truth rather clearly - because I have expended effort "EXCEEDINGLY, OR EXTRAORDINARILY"To me, the mere fact that you are asking this question is very good - and I would suggest that the effort you put into getting your answer will highly corrolate to your degree of righteousness; I believe that it is righteous people by Lane's definition who are the best believers (the Quran tells us to "" 2148, 548, 2361). I hope my comments may have been of some help...

In my personal opinion, it is healthy to doubt, because that will cause you to verify things and gain more knowledge.
Where you'll end up... only The God knows where.About your questions lewdness and being a believer...
I would say that the answers to those questions would be very personal to you.
But the main idea on how to find the answers are still the same -- reflect upon yourselves of what you read from the qur'an to your life experiences.For example, "taqwa". I don't know how you understand this word currently, but I understand it more of "being aware/conscious of <something>" rather than "being righteous". Thus, 22 for me is talking about those who are aware, and only through this awareness they can gain guidance. So to avoid "lewdness" for example, I just try to be aware when I am in lewd-mode ;D (what triggerred it, what have I done during this lewd-mode, is it beneficial to me, etc). Reflect on these questions while reading the qur'an, I'll get my answers regarding "how to avoid lewdness".
As for "believer", I understand it more of those who can uphold the trust/"amanah" given to them, not just those who believe in something. Surah 70 and 90 for example, contain something about the "what" and "how to" of this question.
