    Selam to all

Well, I already looked and searched the forum as well as Quran to find direct or indirect statement about whether the dead can hear us but they cannot respond and I could not find .

This is a widespread belief among many Muslims that the dead can hear us, hence the greeting when they pass by any graveyard.

A search on Quran brought these results

    Chapter 2
2260 And Abraham said "My Lord, show me how you resurrect the dead." He said "Do you not already believe?" He said "I do, but it is so my heart can be relieved." He said "Choose four birds, then cut them, then place parts of the birds on each mountain, then call them to you; they will come racing towards you. And know that God is Noble, Wise."
    Chapter 10
1042 And there are some of them who listen to you; but can you make the deaf hear, if they do not comprehend?
    Chapter 27
2780 You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs and flee.
    Chapter 30
3052 You cannot make the dead listen, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they have turned their backs.
    Chapter 35
3514 If you call on them, they cannot hear you. And even if they hear you, they cannot respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will reject your idolatry. And none can inform you like an Expert.

Can someone give some more examples or elaborate a bit on that.

    God bless you all

    FJ

      Salaam Aleikum,

The Muslims had taken over the widespread belief of the concept of a 'soul'. In the Quran mind and body are inseperatable, this is why also we will be resurrected with body, as our mind only exists with a body. The terms as far as I have understood refers to 'whole being', and not to a metaphyisical soul, this is Greek concept made up by the ancient philossophers, only Aristotles denied the idea of a seperate Self.

The Quran denies the dead are concious of us

3652 They will exclaim, ?Oh, woe unto us! Who has awakened us from our beds of sleep? This is what the Beneficent promised, and the Messengers spoke the truth.? ('Marqad' = Bed of sleep = Resting place. The concept of punishment in the grave is non-Qur?anic and, hence, wrong).

There is also a verse that says the true Believers are alive, but I believe this refers that they have earned the Blissful eternity, while the Deniers are denied of the progress.

        Peace FJ,

        You asked

Well, I already looked and searched the forum as well as Quran to find direct or indirect statement about whether the dead can hear us but they cannot respond and I could not find .

        But you did find it...

3514 If you call on them, they cannot hear you. And even if they hear you, they cannot respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will reject your idolatry. And none can inform you like an Expert.

But context is important. Who is "them"?
3513 ...as for those whom you call on besides Him, they do not possess a seed's shell

Perhaps 3514 is a microcosm of all humanity as 3513 is in reference to "saints" and such people that others idolize and pray to, signifying their lack of any power or ability outside of God's law.

Whether or not the dead can hear us will remain unknown until we are dead. And then it will be too late to let anyone else know confused

But I have to disagree with Arnold here. My own udnerstanding of man's dual-nature actually comes from outside of islam or any muslim influence and sits well with my own understanding of my self. Not to mention the fact that bones of dead people are still here.

        Peace,
        Tay

That was my concern! I did not know whether the verse was talking about the dead ones since "they cannot hear you and even if they can" is there. I had a discussion with a Jordanian and he insisted that it is a widespread belief besides being an agreement between most of scholars that the dead can hear us and we can't hear them. I knew i read somewhere that that isn't true and tried to find the verses to prove my point and, 3513 is the strongest one unless there is another one which I have not been able to find.

Whether or not the dead can hear us will remain unknown until we are dead. And then it will be too late to let anyone else know confused

Well, that's one way to find out but then you would not need it hmm

          Peace,
          FJ

All this probably stems from confusion with verses below?

2154 And say not of those who are slain in the way of Allah. "They are dead." Nay, they are living, though ye perceive (it) not.

            3169 Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord;

Although "alive" in spiritual sense there is a physical difference of course...

3522 Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead. Allah can make any that He wills to hear; but thou canst not make those to hear who are (buried) in graves.

I have found the traditional understanding and commentary of this concept of the Shahid 'living' as opposed to people who simply die quite interesting. I'll see if I can dig up any stuff on this but I'm sure there are others who know what I'm talking about.
