    33-50

O Prophet! surely We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who fled with you; and a believing woman if she gave herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desired to marry her -- specially for you, not for the (rest of) believers; We know what We have ordained for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess in order that no blame may attach to you; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Permission to wed first cousins has always intrigued me, as it has been proved beyond doubt that in such a scenario 3rd or 4th generation starts to produce crippled offsprings.

Christians think that it is incestuous to marry a first cousin, and their understanding has to have some logical religious basis.

The above ayah is allowing cousin marriage, why? why did God had to send a revelation like this ? probably people in Mohammad's time did not marry first cousins.

let's read the verse carefully . Is it a one time permission? only for that time ? for the immigrated cousins ? because the believers were a short family?

    Thanks

    peace

      Peace siki,

Being a former Christian, I have never felt comfortable seeing people wed their cousins.....and as for the ayah, notice toward the end that it says (as per Mohd Asad) "....a privilege for thee and not for other believers. We have already made known what WE have enjoined upon them with regard to their wives and those whome their right hands may possess."

This sounds to me (without delving in depth) that we all are NOT supposed to marry our cousins.....right????

I wonder what is actually the big deal with marrying cousins? Does that have bad health effect on the children or something? Or is it just how the society or culture perceives?

          Peace be with you

3350 The first 2 categories Wives and Ma Malakat Aymankum seems to have a condition ?dower/ujoor? and ?bestowed upon by Allah? respectively. For cousins does the ?emigrated with thee? condition apply only for the Messenger or believers in general at that time..

          Like to hear your thoughts.

            Peace all,

423-24 allows cousin marriages in general because they are not forbidden by those verses. That, however, does not mean that one HAS TO marry one's cousins. It is left up to oneself whether one wants to do that or not.

423 Forbidden for you are your mothers, and your daughters, and your sisters, and your fathers' sisters, and your mothers' sisters, and the daughters of your brother, and the daughters of your sister, and your foster mothers who suckled you, and your sisters from suckling, and the mothers of your wives, and your step-daughters residing in your homes from your wives which you have already consummated the marriage with; if you have not consummated the marriage then there is no sin upon you; and the wives of your sons that are from your seed, and that you join between two sisters except what has already been done. God is Forgiving, Merciful.

424 And the protected from the women, except those committed to you by oath; God's scripture is over you; and permitted for you is what is beyond this, if you are seeking with your money to be protected and not for illicit sex. As for those whom you have already had joy with, then you shall give them their dowries as an obligation. There is no sin upon you for what you agree to after the obligation. God is Knowledgeable, Wise.

There was no need to send a permission to wed in 33-50, if it was allowed ?
And that permission seems, one time , for the prophet only.

I think, they are not Haram, but not a suitable option, and hence one should avoid marrying them.

This option should only be considered/exercised, when it becomes absolutely unavoidable in special circumstances.

Any more clues from the book , from anybody?

              peace

              sikandar
