Is it wrong according to God's law?

The word deception, as defined by my book, means "the communication of messages intended to mislead others, to make them believe what we ourselves do not believe."

Is deception pardonable if it is used for the benefit of society? For example, a youthful looking journalist who is fluent in spanish registered himself as an undocumented immigrant at a sweatshop.. the news network suspects the sweatshop is exploiting and abusing its workers..

does the mean justify an end when it bring more good than harm?

    salam.

      Salam,

I remember either reading or hearing somewhere

When giving charity it's ok to lie if it's designed not to hurt the person you are giving charity to. Basicly if you are helping someone out and they are too proud to except it, it'd be ok to say, nah.. it's not from me. -X

That's one thing I could think of.. anyone else?

      peace

Deception for a greater cause is pardonable as long as it does not harm anyone unjustly in my book.

Peace Katara and welcome to the forum,

I agree with LP on this one. But I find this part iffy..

does the mean justify an end when it bring more good than harm?
More good than harm, can mean anything. You know, kinda like George Bush thinks he's doing right now. Okay that may not have been a good example, but I'm just saying that there could be some harm involved for a 'greater good', in that case I disagree. But as long as it doesn't harm anyone, then yes it should be fine, IMO.

I completely agree with zenje. Any happiness or good that results in the misery of even one person is a false happiness/good. Doesn't God say that whoever kills one soul unjustifiably is as if they kill all the people?

as fara as I believe, deception is not allowed in Islam but in one circumstance, which is being compelled to utter the words of disbelieve, in that case we have been forced to say something that our hearts don't believe in it

                Salam

                  Salam.
i have not make my conclusion. But i'm contributing these two points

                  1. Many times it is mentioned in the quran that believers should be truthful.
                  2. The example of satan using deception, and examples of disbelievers and hypocrits saying what is not true...

Ahmedbahgat, i remember that msg,..but can someone give us the surah and ayat number concerning that msg?

M_Mehdi, you said "When giving charity it's ok to lie if it's designed not to hurt the person you are giving charity to. Basicly if you are helping someone out and they are too proud to except it, it'd be ok to say, nah.. it's not from me."

I donno about that yet... but i prefer to say "it is from a person you know but s/he wishes you not to know who is it from..."

An interesting question, people do have different points of view and different values and I do believe that
it is impossible not to lie several times every day.

I think your heart always knows if you are deceiving in the name of malice, good faith, vanity or ignorance.

Just take your cue from your conscience and if you feel bad about a particular deception, chances are
                    you are probably right.

                    Here is an interesting site

                      Peace Katara,

16106 Whoever rejects God after having believed; except for one who is forced while his heart is still content with belief; and has opened his chest to rejection, then they will have a wrath from God and they will have a great retribution.

4028 And a believing man of Pharaoh's family, who hid his faith, said Would ye kill a man because he saith My Lord is Allah, and hath brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is lying, then his lie is upon him; and if he is truthful then some of that wherewith he threateneth you will strike you. Lo! Allah guideth not one who is a prodigal, a liar.
