webcast about Sunni jurist interpretation of "no compulsion in deen" verse
-
I don't understand, is the woman the sunni, or is she pointing out the sunni?
She is not a Muslim, indeed in the past she believed Muhammad did not even exist but retracted that after seeing evidence that he did. Funny she did not look at what other verses said about the subject, since She is not a muslim she is concerned about how jurist understood it. But very interesting knowledge we can gain. Its amazing how she said that this verse was problematic because it would have stood in the way of creating an Islamic state if religion is a private mater. Just shows that Joseph Schacht and Goldziher had some point when they said Shariah was an (Imam Shafi) Abbasid innovation.
This is an article by her about the prophet and Quran

Salam,
Thanks for the video. It shows how a timeless Quran will always "fit" its society with different interpretations which directly relate to today's life. If this is falsified then we would need a new Messenger and a new book.
I don't see anything wrong with new interpretations as long as they're logical and righteous, whereas looking at the Quran historically as if it's a bunch of ancient stories is sinful.
I see the verse as "you shall not force anyone into your religion" OR "you shall not hate any other religion". After all, God guides whoever He pleases and misguides whoever He pleases ... and some will tell you that Islam is not even a religion it's a state of submission to God ... so anyone on earth can be a Muslim and not even know it. People would readily accept a logical religion which makes sense.
We have a book of laws and guidelines, but how to set those and live by them is another matter.
peace sun
Remember the jurist had to reconcile those verses not only with the concept of the Islamic state but also with hadiths. And we know thats the REAL reasons why they had to find a way to interpret the Quran the exact opposite of what it says
The Hadith (the body of quotes attributed to Muhammad and claimed eyewitnesses' accounts of Muhammad's life and deeds) includes statements that Muslim scholars such as Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid see as supporting the death penalty for apostasy. Only those from Sahih Bukhari, which are considered reliable by most Muslims generally are given below
"Allah's Apostle said, The blood of a Muslim, who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am His Apostle, cannot be shed except in three cases In Qisas for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate) and leaves the Muslims." 98317
Narrated 'Ikrima 'Ali burnt some people and this news reached ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.'" 452260The legal regulation concerning the male and the female who reverts from Islam (apostates). Ibn 'Umar, Az-Zuhri and Ibrahim said, "A female apostate (who reverts from Islam), should be killed. And the obliging of the reverters from Islam (apostates) to repent. Allah said ? 'How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and (after) they bore witness that the Apostle (Muhammad) was true, and that Clear Signs had come unto them? And Allah does not guide the wrong-doing people. As for such the reward is that on them (rests) the curse of Allah, the Angels, and of all mankind. They will abide there-in (Hell). Neither will their torment be lightened nor it will be postponed (for a while). Except for those that repent after that and make amends. Verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Surely those who disbelieved after their belief, and go on adding to their defiance of faith, never will their repentance be accepted, and they are those who have gone astray.' (Sura 386-90) Bukhari Volume 9, Book 84, Chapter 2, p. 42-43.
-
Narrated 'Ikrima Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to 'Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn 'Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's Apostle forbade it, saying, 'Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire).' I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" 98457
-
Narrated Abu Burda Abu Musa said, "I came to along with two men (from the tribe) of Ash'ariyin, one on my right and the other on my left, while Allah's Apostle was brushing his teeth (with a Siwak), and both men asked him for some employment. said, 'O Abu Musa (O 'Abdullah bin Qais!).' I said, 'By Him Who sent you with the Truth, these two men did not tell me what was in their hearts and I did not feel (realize) that they were seeking employment.' As if I were looking now at his Siwak being drawn to a corner under his lips, and he said, 'We never (or, we do not) appoint for our affairs anyone who seeks to be employed. But O Abu Musa! (or 'Abdullah bin Qais!) Go to Yemen.'" then sent Mu'adh bin Jabal after him and when Mu'adh reached him, he spread out a cushion for him and requested him to get down (and sit on the cushion). Behold There was a fettered man beside Abu Musa. Mu'adh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Muisa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Musa requested Mu'adh to sit down but Mu'adh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers and one of us said, 'I pray and sleep, and I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as for my prayers.'" 98458
-
Narrated Abu Musa A man embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism. Mu'adh bin Jabal came and saw the man with Abu Musa. Mu'adh asked, "What is wrong with this (man)?" Abu Musa replied, "He embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism." Mu'adh said, "I will not sit down unless you kill him (as it is) the verdict of Allah and His Apostle." 989271 hmm
The Quran is clear
"There shall be no coercion in matters of faith" (2256)
"And had your Lord so willed, all those who live on earth would have attained to faith - all of them, do you then think that you could compel people to believe?" (1099)
"Said (Noah) O my people - what do you think? If ( it be true that) I am taking my stand on a clear evidence from my Lord . . . to which you have remained blind, can we force it on you even though it is hateful to you?" (112
"And so (O Prophet) exhort them; your task is only to exhort; you cannot compel" (8821-22).
18.29. Say, "The truth is from your Lord" Let him who will believe, and let him who will, reject (it) for the wrong-doers We have prepared a Fire whose (smoke and flames), like the walls and roof of a tent, will hem them in if they implore relief they will be granted water like melted brass, that will scald their faces, how dreadful the drink! How uncomfortable a couch to recline on!
74.11 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-
5.99. The Messenger's duty is but to proclaim (the message). But Allah knoweth all that ye reveal and ye conceal
79.45. Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it
88.21. Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish.
88.22. Thou art not one to manage (men's) affairs.
Things that make you go hmm
Wonder where all these verses went

Salam,
Good thinking Bigmo. I started thinking about such issues too after watching the video. We can't rely on history or hadith to interpret the Quran. That's why many of us here are doing thematic cross-referencing and language analysis. The lecturer made Islam sound as if it started out a violent religion ... and verses in later revelations override previous verses and make them irrelevant? I don't know about that! hmm
-
Peace "Bigmo",
Yous aid amongst other thingsIts amazing how she said that this verse was problematic because it would have stood in the way of creating an Islamic state if religion is a private mater.
JK- No thts incorrect. No compulsion in religion surely means no one can force anyone into believing as they do or if they after beeleiving start turning elsewhere and /or speaking out against it, they are killed. However if the MAJORITY of people in a country/state agree upon isnituting religious laws and/or laws derived directly from the Quran or even the nonsensible shariah then so it shall be. thats true democracy. What sunnis do however is they try to force the Shariah upon everyone. If they through argument brought the ppl to vote for the shariah and the majority to accept it then nothing cld hidner it from becoming legalizing and operative. And yes as Quran Aloners we must try our best to put the Quranic legal laws into constitution otherwise weve failed miserably. If wht you mean by "no compulsion in religion" is true then why in GOD's Named does He mention legal laws inc tht of punsihemtn for adultery, theft, etc in the Quran at all? Why does He say "Oh you beelive do this and tht for the relevant crimes"? Would make no sense. GOD Bless!
-
The way I see it, Islam is very scaleable - you can be vaguely a Muslim at one point, but at another, a full blown mumin living in a completely quranic state (yeah, right).

The believers are to watch the punishment probably to ensure no abuse by the punisher beyond whats recomended and also as a reminder for them of the humiliation of crime. Yes every society has its laws and customs and we are to implement justly(meaning equally on everyone) however God does not deal with humans throught justice but "qist" which means measured scale. Or something like that, i heard a lecture ones about adl versus qist. By the way the lecture said everything "meezan" is mentioned in the Quran is uses the term "qist". Meezan of course is scale.

JK- Yes but for adultery Quran says 100 lashes n public, which can be interpreted as symbolic lashes ok but theres still public humiliation. And tht is not common at all. Many western countries wldnt agree with it for whtever personal reasons there maybe. So my pt stands the Quran contains legal laws with a certain amount of detail and we need to do our best to bring them into constitution, not through violence like the sunnis do, but through dialogue. GOD Bless!

Sorry, the meezan was in another lecture, not hers. You see the reason that verse of no compulsion was problematic because it would mean religion is a private matter, and this concept conflicts with an state based on religion. The problem is you immediately equate anthing in the Quran with islam. Most of these legal guidelines have their roots also in pre Islamic Arabia. They were the accepted norms and legal codes of the community. How can God create a religious state if religion is a private matter? There is no reason to believe, unlike the theology of the Quran, that these laws were inherently different than what the community were accustomed to. Its quite obvious though, that even the community had gender differences in legalism and differences in legalism between freed men and slaves, God ordained everyone to offer salaat, make haj, fast ramadan, obey the comandments and pay zakat, if they have wealth. There is no gender or class differences in the deen however in state function there can be. This in not a Divine approval but its human evolution. God judges everyone accordingly regardless of class or gender or ethnicity yet the state has to differentiate. If not based om gender, religion and race, it will do so in citizenship as most nations do today. People here and most Muslims are not able to seperate the religion from the state because the state was run by the prophet and the guidelines to the prophet on how to govern also came from the Quran. So they immediately say this is God's law. Yet God does not recognize gender, or class or nationality according to the requirements of the deen. So why should the state be a function of His divine approval when it does differentiate. While the pagans did not accept women to testify or inherit, the prphet was ordered to give them half of what was previously not allowed. But God did not give half in deen, she is to perform haj like men, pray 5 times like men, fast ramadan like men, and obey the deen like men. The deen did not seperate between men adultery or women adultery or men theft or women theft but the state did. Slaves have the same requirements also. So I believe this was due to the accepted norm and cultural mulieu of the time. God does not equate Himself with human justice and humans by nature evolve in their accepted norms and cultural practices. The reason why the Madina state functioned and succeeded that it layed a legal framework appropriate with its time and place while the Islamist tried to establish a framework based on 7th century(actually to some degree 9th) realities and failed after taking the concept of the Islamic state from the Ulema. Yet the deen has no need to evolve and be altered since it equates everyone the same and relies on established physical features on Earth for the rituals such as the sun, moon, water and established human ethics and morals universal in its concept such as lying, cheating, honesty and generosity and sin.
I find this the hardest for Muslims to accept, even Quranist. Since unlike Jesus, the prophet of Islam governed, and because the Quran always guides the prophet in any situation he is in and always guides his companions so long as the prophet is alive among them, Muslims immediately look at it as part of the deen. Unable to implement them the way it was in Madinah, Muslims are now stuck between accepting a modern state that seems to them in conflict with the legal codes of the 1st Muslim community which they find in the Quran and the sira. Or implement a legal and political framework based on 7th or 9th century realities that can no longer be implemented since the social and political and economic realities today is drasticly different from the 7th century.
Therefore we are not able to accept a modern democracy and also unable to create a state in the model of 7th century Arabia. We are lost and confused &

JK- I think your missing one basic principle of the Quran namely tht GOD IS DOING EVERYTHING. So yes he even controls thing THROUGH HUMANS AND THEIR AFFAIRS. He has calculated everything in advance and everything be it seemngly fair or unfair has its purpose or reason though we might not understand it at any particular time. Now lets get back to the legal laws mentioned in the Quran. Here read these
The thief, male or female, you shall mark their hands* as a punishment for their crime, and to serve as an example from GOD. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.
So who gave this law? GOD directly through inspiration as you can see from the phrase. Its Divine with high prob since its in the Quran, the book which has never been scientifically falsified though it is potentially extremely falsifiable.
The adulteress and the adulterer you shall whip each of them a hundred LASHES. Do not be swayed by pity from carrying out GOD's law, if you truly believe in GOD and the Last Day. And let a group of believers witness their penalty.*
Those who accuse chaste women of adultery, then fail to produce four witnesses, you shall whip them eighty LASHES, and do not accept any testimony from them; they are wicked.
So you see now? What do you say now?I find this the hardest for Muslims to accept, even Quranist. Since unlike Jesus, the prophet of Islam governed, and because the Quran always guides the prophet in any situation he is in and always guides his companions so long as the prophet is alive among them, Muslims immediately look at it as part of the deen. JK- Excuse me your going with hadith now. Where do u get all this info from? Whenever GOD issued a LOCAL COMMANDMENT He said so like
For those who are Jewish we prohibited animals with undivided hoofs; and of the cattle and sheep we prohibited the fat, except that which is carried on their backs, or in the viscera, or mixed with bones. That was a retribution for their transgressions, and we are truthful.
The above verses are for ALL BELEIVERS otherwise GOD would have made it clear and said ending it "These were the laws we appointed for Muhammad at a certain time" or something similar in order for us to know they aint universal. If thts not the case then this means GOD is confusing us.Therefore we are not able to accept a modern democracy and also unable to create a state in the model of 7th century Arabia. We are lost and confused &
JK- Im not. Im always pro democracy but tht doesnt mean i shld give up my views. Wer not to introduce those laws by force. Nobody said so but wer to do our best to put these laws into constituion through debate and dialogue. Who says we need to agree with wht the majority says? No one. We only need to tolerate it meaning not use violence against it. GOD Bless!

Anyways the verse goes like this
5.38. As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her hands a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime and Allah is Exalted in power.
5.39. But if the thief repents after his crime, and amends his conduct, Allah turneth to him in forgiveness; for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
And
- The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.
24.3. Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman to the Believers such a thing is forbidden.
24.4. And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations),- flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their evidence ever after for such men are wicked transgressors;-
24.5. Unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.
24.6. And for those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their own,- their solitary evidence (can be received) if they bear witness four times (with an oath) by Allah that they are solemnly telling the truth;
24.7. And the fifth (oath) (should be) that they solemnly invoke the curse of Allah on themselves if they tell a lie.
24.8. But it would avert the punishment from the wife, if she bears witness four times (with an oath) By Allah, that (her husband) is telling a lie;
24.9. And the fifth (oath) should be that she solemnly invokes the wrath of Allah on herself if (her accuser) is telling the truth.
24.10. If it were not for Allah.s grace and mercy on you, and that Allah is Oft- Returning, full of Wisdom,- (Ye would be ruined indeed).
24.11. Those who brought forward the lie are a body among yourselves think it not to be an evil to you; On the contrary it is good for you to every man among them (will come the punishment) of the sin that he earned, and to him who took on himself the lead among them, will be a penalty grievous.
24.12. Why did not the believers - men and women - when ye heard of the affair,- put the best construction on it in their own minds and say, "This (charge) is an obvious lie" ?
24.13. Why did they not bring four witnesses to prove it? When they have not brought the witnesses, such men, in the sight of Allah, (stand forth) themselves as liars!
So I see it as historical, many gossips and lies in a society like tribal Arabia where issues like this can mean conflicts or maybe even war between tribes. I see it as the accepted norm of the period and its culture. Its clear the Quran wanted to prohibit rumours and lies and tried to ensure no ftna can occur. JK- And wht do u think deen is? Its a complete way of life. Its NOT RELIGION thts a false translation made by sectarians. Read bro Arnolds articles. Deen means judgement in the sense covers every aspect of life. And yes ppl dont need to accept GOD's system of justice but we must do to get it running through dialogue.

Maybe you can do some research about it. See which verses in the Quran are historic such as God's command to prepare military equipment like horses and so on for battle.
Or God talking about creating for us cattle and so on so we can travel with. Or humans using stars and so for navigation. So don't you think flooging is something of history? Or God saying He likes people standing in battle in a straight line, today that will be a disaster. Does anybody has other examples?

Peace "Bigmo",

JK- Horses and attle as millitary euqipment are just as an example but the general reparation is wht wer to focus on.

JK- Yes indeed GOD says He has created cattle from whose meat we can east and we MAY also use them for travel. This is not a command but a statement of fact of wht can be done with these animals and it acn still be done. Even the millitarty units many a times rides on horses when theyve to go through the jungle for example where other vehicles wont do very well. It all depends. Reg stars for navigation it also depends and GOD doesnt say you HAVE to use them. Its not a command just a description of their benefits and if we go into space into the future the stars maybe alot of help to su there too.

JK- I see the flogging example as totally general though they maybe intererpeted as symbolic flogging INFRONT OF THE PUBLIC. Arnold Schwarzenegger also introduced public exposure of criminals. It puts them to real shame and works very well. And whts tht about straight line. Cld u quote the verse? GOD Bless!

There's no Compulsion in Islam means you should not force anyone to embrace Islam. It doesn't apply to Muslims as you can force a Muslim to practice if you are socially close to him in a way like how you sometimes in love force your reluctant guest to eat. Other Muslims you can force in a way the doctors force a child for a life-saving shot and if the parents of the child say don't force anyone for anything like that then the doctor cares the least about the shot though deeply worried about the child's life at its peril.
Coming to the distorted history forcefully-widely taught in all schools of the world been written by Prejudiced Europeans who hate Islam and Muslims, and the History written by Europeans who rape their own daughters and practice incest or at least do not mind their women having illicit sex, lacking high human respect, values, traits, ethics and ethiquettes, morally profligate and corrupt so much that their 70% children hardly know who one of their or both their parents is, cannot be true history. Also why should we Muslims believe in a history written by Europeans. -

Also the Muslims who are Murthad or Leave Islam are a matter with Muslims. If an American Soldier in a Taliban uniform just standing before American Soldiers utters words like I will destroy America, then Imagine his condition in Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo. -

Did you see the sectarian sunni/shia "Muslims" shouting in the streets of UK "Death to those who insult Islam. GOD Bless Hitler, etc". Here take a look at this

And NOT A SINGLE BRITISH POLICEMAN even touched them. So dont talk nonsense here. Moreover "murtad" means when one leaves Islam and then preaches his new religion to the people. Why the hell should such a person be killed? He hasnt harmed anyones life at all? So you better get your facts straight. GOD Bless! -
Britain, Canada, and dare I say, the USA, are closer to Islamic states than anything in the middle east or the rest of the world for that matter. Scandinavia and Mid-Europe probably fits the definition of "Quranic" best.

Salaams All,
................ who are Murthad or Leave Islam are a matter with Muslims.
God allmighty would be ashamed for one of His creatures uttering such Heathenistic words- as though people own others of their cult - i think, and such nonsense must be shunned at all costs.
God Bless All.
