Taking other people's sin by gossiping?!
-
My husband has told me on numerous occasions that if someone gossips about the other, they're taking the other's sin (decreasing the amount). That doesn't make sense to me now that I've been reading more Qur'anic based articles and the Qur'an itself.... unless I haven't got to that part in the Qur'an.? I thought everyone is responsible for their own sins ... and if you gossip about someone you're just creating sin for yourself?
Has anyone heard that before? -
I'm afraid I can't see anything like that, Aynur. Have a look at 49/12 for the ruling on gossip.
The only place where I can see 'drawing another's sin' is 5/29, the story of the two sons of Adam.

Has anyone heard that before?I have heard that before. It is not true that you take another's sins, because you can't take on the burden of another's sins, (i forget the verse number), but you can make sins while the other person has sins forgiven.
Take the following for example
(Qur?an Surah 5 Verse 45, Reformist translation545 We have decreed for them in it that a life
for a life, and an eye for an eye, and a
nose for a nose, and an ear for an ear,
and a tooth for a tooth, and wounds to be
similar; and whoever remits anything of
it, then it will cancel sins for him.
Whoever does not judge by what God has sent down, then these are the
wicked.)So, I guess, in this case, the net effect is that the person forgiving has a smaller balance of sins and the person causing harm, e.g. backbiting, is gaining a larger balance of sins.
Just putting it out there
Peace
Sarah

Peace Sarah .... do you know if that is a typical belief among mainstream Muslims?

it might be. I heard this from my friends in high school, and two hijabi girls told me the same thing (one was when I was in Grade 7, and the other in Grade 11), and this was in different schools.
I have heard similar things from people at the Muslim Student Association at my present college. -
