Regarding those contradictions in the hadith, according to sunnis I've spoken to all the contradictions are not really so. They can be explained away, but only scholars and learned people know how. Which is why you have to study with them for years and years. It's such a long process The Quran needs to be explained by the hadith because it is not enough to be understood by itself, which in turn are so vague and contradictory which is why you have sheikhs/maulanas/muftis to explain them. I'm wondering then, doesn't that mean that the prophet didn't do his job well enough, if according to sunni's he was sent to explain the Quran? Oh also, does anyone know if sunnis and shias pray in the same way or not?

I find it confusing how Allah would explain the washing (wusu) in the Quran and give the salaat times too, but not 'how to' pray. It forces me to consider that perhaps salaat really is given in the Quran but we've just to find it and understand it (as many are doing here). It's pretty tough when you've been taught all your life that salaat is done in a very specific way with details down to how one's feet should be placed.

Salaam Abu GG, using the Quran can you please support your argument (not in this thread) that hadith external to the Quran are needed for our salvation? Thanks.

The "explanations" are pretty thinly veiled. Look at the "Sun prostrating under Allah's throne" hadith & its explanations.

Shahih Bukhari Volume 2, Book 21, Number 230

              Narrated Al-Mughira

The Prophet used to stand (in the prayer) or pray till both his feet or legs swelled. He was asked why (he offered such an unbearable prayer) and he said, "should I not be a thankful slave."

That is how the prophet allegedly prayed but as we all can witness, sunnis and shias don't pray that way.

Sunnis and shias don't pray the same way. When shias pray, they don't cross their hand on their chest while sunnis do.

Interestingly, both sunnis and shias claim that their prayer is the same as that of the prophet. Whose claim is correct???

Another difference is shias pray using turba.

Shahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 12, Number 798

                  Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri

I saw Allah's Apostle prostrating in mud and water and saw the mark of mud on his forehead.

I also never see sunnis and shias praying like the prophet as per the sunnah above ;D

This is what I thought. If they both claim that the prayer is detailed in the hadith then why do they differ? The same thing bugs me with the idea of muta marriage. Why don't sunni's accept those hadith which make it a legal activity? Because 'they're not authentic hadith'. Their hypocrisy makes me itchy.

                      Exactly ...exactly brother twilight

The thing is there is no such thing as "the prayer is detailed in hadith". Unless and until I see sunnis and shias pray as per hadiths I already posted in this thread then their claim will only expose their hypocrisy (they claim the prayer is detailed in hadith but when the details are shown to them they do not follow!).

The same thing bugs me with the idea of muta marriage. Why don't sunni's accept those hadith which make it a legal activity? Because 'they're not authentic hadith'. Their hypocrisy makes me itchy.

Some weeks back I had a discussion regarding muta marriage. Some sunnis were mocking muta as "legalized fornication" and they ridiculed a shia brother because he accepts muta. Then I reminded those sunnis not to ridicule muta unless they reject muta hadiths completely. I explained to them that accepting muta hadiths and at the same time saying muta = "legalized fornication" is the same as saying that the prophet had legalized fornication.

Is there Sunni hadiths which acceot Mutah?

                          Book 008, Number 3243

Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported We were on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and we had no women with us. We said Should we not have ourselves castrated? He (the Holy Prophet) forbade us to do so He then granted us permission that we should contract temporary marriage for a stipulated period giving her a garment, and 'Abdullah then recited this verse 'Those who believe do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Allah does not like trangressers" (al-Qur'an, v. 87).

                          Book 008, Number 3247

Salama b. al. Akwa' and Jabir b. Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) came to us and permitted us to contract temporary marriage.

                          Book 008, Number 3248

Ibn Uraij reported 'Ati' reported that jibir b. Abdullah came to perform 'Umra, and we came to his abode, and the people asked him about different things, and then they made a mention of temporary marriage, whereupon he said Yes, we had been benefiting ourselves by this temporary marriage during the lifetime of theHoly Prophet (may peace be upon him) and during the tinie of Abi! Bakr and 'Umar.
