Sama - to abstain from-
-
Salaams All,
it simply means that - according to quranic dictionary p325.
Okay abstain from what - just go along to where ever this word occurs in the quran , look at the ayah's surrounding the word and for certainty you will find what is it you are to abstain from.
of course remember the mistranslation is rife.
Fasting is from............ check another religion where they fast .....for a week, a month, even six months.....
According to my understanding.
God Bless.

Greetings,
Fasting is from............ check another religion where they fast...
I was curious to do just this, so I looked up 'fasting' in Wikipedia. Below are excerpts that may be of interest
(Please see http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting for the full article.)Bah?'? faith
..."fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset during the Bah?'? month of `Ala' (between March 2 through March 20). Bah?'u'll?h established the guidelines in the Kit?b-i-Aqdas. It is the complete abstaining from both food and drink (including abstaining from smoking). Observing the fast is an individual obligation, and is binding on all Bah?'?s who have reached the age of maturity, which is fifteen years of age."Buddhism
"Buddhist monks and nuns following the Vinaya rules commonly do not eat each day after the noon meal, though many orders today do not enforce this. This is not considered a fast, but rather a disciplined regime aiding in meditation. Fasting is generally considered by Buddhists as a form of asceticism and as such is rejected as a deviation from the Middle way." eatChristianity
"The "acceptable fast" is discussed in the biblical Book of Isaiah, chapter 583-7, and is discussed metaphorically. In essence, it means to abstain from satisfying hunger or thirst, and any other lustful needs we may yearn for."Hinduism
Fasting is a very integral part of the Hindu religion..."the person fasting does not partake any food or water from the previous day's sunset until 48 minutes after the following day's sunrise. Fasting can also mean limiting oneself to one meal during the day and/or abstaining from eating certain food types and/or eating only certain food types. In any case, even if the fasting Hindu is non-vegetarian, he/she is not supposed to eat or even touch any animal products (i.e. meat, eggs)on a day of fasting."Judaism
"Fasting for Jews means completely abstaining from food and drink, including water. Taking medication, or even brushing teeth is forbidden on the major fast days of Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av (See below), but permitted on minor fast days. Observant Jews fast on six days of the year. With the exception of Yom Kippur, fasting is never permitted on Shabbat, for the commandment of keeping Shabbat is biblically ordained and overrides the later rabbinically-instituted fast days. Yom Kippur is the only fast day which is explicitly stated in the Torah."Sikhism
"Sikhism is probably the only major organised world religion that does not promote fasting except for medical reasons. The Sikh Gurus discourage the devotee from engaging in this ritual as it is considered to "brings no spiritual benefit to the person". The Sikh holy Scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib tell us "Fasting, daily rituals, and austere self-discipline - those who keep the practice of these, are rewarded with less than a shell."(SGGS page 216). So most Sikhs have never undertaken a fast of any kind." eathmm

Salaams Ilisa,
I think its a bad, bad thing - instead of following the quran and giving up bad behaviours/ actions/ endeavors , abstaining from them throughout the year, when ever they accur, some people abstain from food for a number of days but keep doing the rest of the bad, bad things - so sad, and keep the world in turmoil.
will anybody ever be able to open their eye's ever.
I doubt it, very much.
They keep programing their kids this way - from the time they are born.
I am glad i don't belong to such a race.
God Bless.

Greetings mz,
I know what you mean. To me, a fasting 'month' (i.e. 'ramadan' imposed on ALL the people at the exact same time, is very stressful--physically and mentally In addition, as it stands now - with the 'month' moving around the solar year -it is even harder. The human body is part and parcel of all of creation. The rest of creation moves in set sequences, at set periods of time. In this way, the organism is able to perform regular functions at regular times. A month of fasting that changes in its relation in time to the solar patterns does not allow the organism (namely us) to adequately prepare for it. It is always a bit out of balance with the rest of creation.
