It depends who I talk to. Because to the standard atheist/christian/other, the word "muslim" is synonymous with Sunni/Shia.

Curious to know how you guys label yourselves when someone asks you to what belief you belong to.
I myself got that question from a lady and said 'muslimah'. Her reaction'But you don't wear a headscarf and don't pray 5x a day... You sure don't look like one!'

To avoid a long explanation I just tell them that I belong to God/Allah as an individual and soul. I don't belong to any religious group, just Allah, the Almighty.

What's your take on that? And please don't forget to vote. If none of the descriptions fits you, please explain why not and what you consider yourself to be.

This subject might already have been discussed, but I would like to bring it up again. Hope that you guys don't mind.

I say that Im a muslim that follows the Quran alone, no hadith or sunna.

i think we haven't been labeled in the quran - accept to be or endeavour to be good humans.

All people are made by the same process and have the same origin and are told not to make devisions among themselves.

So best to avoid those who love to devide.....Accept devision of good and Bad.....e.t.c

I would just say "I follow the quran" or "I sort of believe in god" or "it's complicated."
I remember a girl asked me what religion I follow and I said "nothing" and she was like "what!? you don't believe in anything??" I was like I do but it's complicated.

If I'm filling out a form, I'd just say "no religion" or "other" but if I'm having a conversation about beliefs with someone, I'd take a few minutes to explain what my beliefs are.

This isn't really an important issue for me. Most people I know don't care about what others believe, and the only time it ever comes up is when we are discussing religion which isn't very often believe me.

Different answers. It depends on the question. And depends on who asks.

I am usually asked (by strangers) if I were muslim. My answer what's your definition of islam? And so the answer takes between five minutes to a long conversation, depending on the curiousity of the enquirer!

My friends here know me as "our friend who refers to qur'aan only and does not take anything else".

I do not give myself a label. I'd rather explain and let the enquirer choose the adequate label...or sometimes I would say I am not shiite, nor sunni, nor...nor follower of X or Z...

On forms I would either put muslim, or (don't want to say)

i go by 4213, which clearly shows that true religion is a state of the heart and has existed since the dawn of time; So when people ask me what religion, I will say I don't believe in anorganized religion and I follow the quran because of its proofs and great message. And that anyone can be a muslim and the word is only a description.

The concept of traditional religion is illogical to me. Since most people follow their parents' religions, and since most if not all religions claim to be the right one... so me being on the 'right' path depends on me being born in the right family ?!

Remember Jesus claims to be 'muslim' and many others before 'islam' , how's that possible )

Muslim. They usually don't care to know anymore after, and I don't care to explain to them. But if one or two ask some more, I'm more than happy to go as far as they are interested.

i dont see the need to complicate things.... if people ask i explain my views (which are constantly changing and developing anyways!)
i dont see the need to shy away from the label muslim.....

If more details are requested, depends on the context/mood/interest of the person... Could be a short answer, "Muslim by nationality", "Muslim but not sunni or shia", or go on a slightly longer explanation about what Islam's strict monotheism, accepting the Quran and not the Hadith, etc., are about.

It's amusing how quite a few people from different backgounds react awkwardly to this btw.

You can sometimes sense some tension from Non-Muslim Westerners who suddenly feel like they're walking on eggs once you've pronounced the word "Muslim". Or sometimes, it'll fly way over their heads, because what they see doesn't match their idea of what a Muslim is, so the information goes straight away to the trashcan. Or they'll need to classify it with an additional Good/Moderate/Non-Practicing/Westernized label.

Sunnis will think that you're just missing part of your faith because of your very liberal and/or western upbringing. When they see you're interested in Islam nonetheless, they will try to convert you to their polytheist views. It escapes them completely that I've heard the arguments 10000 times before and I've never found them convincing, or that I'm actually NOT a non-practicing Muslim, that my understanding of Islam is just very unorthodox (as per traditional standards) and is in accordance with my lifestyle.
