9:95 people will go to Hell for not going to war! Does anybody understand it?

They will swear to you by Allah, when ye return to them, that ye may leave them alone. So leave them alone For they are an abomination, and Hell is their dwelling-place,-a fitting recompense for the (evil) that they did.?

Surah 9's hell imagery has never really reached me and this is one of those cases. I think this verse may be saying that these rich folk let the poor support them in a battle of self defense without making any effort whatsoever to help whether it be with their wealth or persons as verse 88 would indicate is necessary. Hopefully that helps.

995 When you will have returned to them, (O believers,] they will swear to you by God, with a view to your letting them be. Let them be, then behold, they are loathsome, and hell is their goal in recompense for what they were wont to do.

Sc., "and not punishing them". As a matter of fact, their fears were unfounded, since, on his return from Tabuk, the Prophet took no punitive action against any of those who had failed to follow him on his campaign.Maybe it has more to do with their character than the fact they didn't go to war? Like 997 talks about the hypocrites.

The problem arises when we think that 'war' in Quranic terms is simply fighting physically. It's not. Chapter 8/9 is about a total systemic war between the mu'mineen and kafireen. These two terms in Quran are NOT religious terms. Rather, they refer to those who wish for peace on earth and those who would do mischief. So yes, anyone who shies away from this war between good and evil will, quite logically, be in hell (which is not only in the afterlife but on earth).
