Jizya ~ "alien tax"
-
In states ruled by Islamic law, jizya or jizyah (Arabic ; Ottoman Turkish cizye) is a per capita tax imposed on able bodied non-Muslim men of military age. The tax is not supposed to be levied on slaves, women, children, monks, the old, the sick, hermits and the poor, though these provisions were abandoned in later periods of Muslim history. Non-Muslim citizens who pay the tax are permitted to practice their faith and to enjoy a measure of communal autonomy as well as being entitled to Muslim protection from outside aggression and being exempted from military service amongst numerous other exemptions to levies upon Muslim citizens.
Taxation from the perspective of people who came under the Muslim rule, was a concrete continuation of the taxes paid to earlier regimes, but now lower under the Muslim ruleand from the point of view of the Muslim conqueror was a material proof of the payer's subjection.
The imposition of jizya upon non-Muslims is mandated by the Qur'an (929)
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold forbidden that which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
This is the only Qur'anic verse that enjoins struggle against people of the book. Patricia Crone states that this verse is the only Qur'anic verse which seems to endorse war of aggression, however if read as a continuation of previous verses (91-23), it would be concerned against a particular group of "dualists" (musyrikun) who are accused of oath-breaking and aggression (930)
Jizya is mentioned a number of times in the hadith. Common themes across multiple hadith (and often multiple collections of hadith) include Muhammad ordering his military commanders to fight non-Muslims until they accepted Islam or paid the jizya, Muhammad and a number of caliphs imposing jizya on various peoples, and the eventual abolition of jizya by Jesus' Second Coming.
Jizya was levied in the time of Muhammad on vassal tribes under Muslim protection, including Jews in Khaybar, Christians in Najran, and Zoroastrians in Bahrain. William Montgomery Watt traces its origin to a pre-Islamic practice among the Arabian nomads wherein a powerful tribe would agree to protect its weaker neighbors in exchange for a tribute, which would be refunded if the protection proved ineffectual.
Muhammad himself sent a letter to the Christians and Jews of Elath requiring the imposition of jizya
I have no intention of fighting you before writing to you. Thou hast to accept Islam, or pay the tax, and obey God and his Messenger and the messengers of his Messenger, and do them honour and dress them in fine clothing, not in the raiment of raiders; therefore clothe Zayd in fine robes, for if you satisfy my envoys, you will satisfy me. Surely the tax is known to you. Therefore if you wish to be secure on land and on sea, obey God and his Messenger and you will be free of all payments that you owed the Arab or non-Arabs, apart from the payment to God the payment of his Messenger. But be careful lest thou do not satisfy them, for then I shall not accept anything from you, but I shall fight you . . . . Come then, before a calamity befalls you...

Be muslim or not, you still need to pay a tax. I dont see how this is an unfair hardship towards the Christians or Jews. Matter of fact, it is better than the taxations that we have in United States.
Is there taxation against the atheist or is he not permitted to live there? Also, what of Hindus and other religions?

Jizya, as imposed during Muhammad's time, was never based upon income tax. It was purely a religious tithe mandated upon non-Muslim creed. No country on earth sanctions jizya today. Income tax is not based upon color and creed. The jizya is commanded in the Quran as per 929 which Muslims have now desecrated. This is yet one of the many examples which invariantly displays that Quran was never meant to be for ALL TIMES and cannot possibly be from a merciful god. Read the history of jizya.
Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Pakistan (not sure) and several other Muslim countries do not allow Jews or Israelies to enter their lands. There's no visa available to them regardless of jizya. This is yet another religious cruelty.

can you provide a source for that claim?

The same is true for UAE and other Muslim countries, perhaps not all.

I never liked this tax, it seemed to be very close to an attack upon freedom of religion. I had also had done some research some time ago where it was linked to one of the (but very small cause) causes of the crusades. To me it sounds like "You can keep practicing your religion, but you have to pay us to do so." Is there any record of anyone who refused to pay the tax and what happend to them?

They were sent to "physical hell". Do a google search on the word "jizya" and read on. It is quite shocking. Just what the "doctor" ordered.929 Fight/kill those who do not believe with God and nor the last day and do not forbid what God and His messenger forbids, nor adapt/acknowledge the religion of truth from those who were given the book until they pay the jizya with submission and become subdued (saghiroon).

Aside from that article, it's very simple if one opens their eyes.
Wars are allowed only against aggressors (2190-194), and the word itself means compensation, place two and two together and...
As for the "jizya" implemented by the empires, that is extra-Quranic (unless one disregards 2190 )). Not surprising from the same people who had harems filled with women, and based their deen on conjecture and hearsay, in any case.
This is what happens when verses of the Quran are taken out of context, and the effect is doubled when one resorts to fabricated hearsay to "verify" the "truth".

You said Jews, please show where JEWS are not allowed. Israeli includes Muslim Arabs, Druze, Jews of all kinds, and such. If they do not recognize Israel as a state, why would they wish to allow them in?
You also concealed the fact that Israel denotes most of those as "Enemy countries" and citizens need special permits to go there, in any case.

What empires? What extra-Quranic? Didn't you understand anything out of 929 or that too is out-of-context without your explanation? Since when did the verse 929 become extra-Quranic? What has "harems filled with women" got to do with jizya? How is conjecture and hearsay anything to do with 929. ??? )This is what happens when verses of the Quran are taken out of context, and the effect is doubled when one resorts to fabricated hearsay to "verify" the "truth".
How is the verse 929 out-of-context and what double effects are you talking about? Do you usually hop around all over the forum aimlessly? -

I said Jews or Israelies and not just JEWS? Where is your evidence that they do not recognize Israel as a state and therefore their visas are cut off? Israel is the ONLY country recognized as "jewish". It has nothing to do with some Muslims or Christians or Hindus residing in it?You also concealed the fact that Israel denotes most of those as "Enemy countries" and citizens need special permits to go there, in any case.
I concealed it, LOL ??? The fact that Israel allows for Muslim countries to have special permits speaks volumes on their "enemy countries" who do not and the fact the Muslim Arabs already live there? ;D The Jews have always been a bad omen for Muslims since your prophet took over and the reasons are clear in the Quran ALONE. Send some Jews to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia and they will be slaughtered without mercy. Quite telling of the 5th/6th century Arab jahilia and the jizya. -

Before Egypt recognized Israel, no carrier of an israeli passport (even muslims or christians) were allowed in. After recognition, the ban on Israeli passport holders is lifted and now they enter. Another example is my own country, Sudan, where no israel passport holder is admitted, yet we have sudanese jews who are living and working in the sudan and getting on with their lives, as well as jews from other countries, even during the application of the so called islamic law, nothing extra was applied to them nor have they left the country. The third example is Iran, where 25,000 jews are still living there.
Moreover, it is not just the Israeli passport that is not admitted, but also an israeli visa on any passport will render the holder of that passport not welcome to enter a country that does not recognize the state of israel. Westerners know this very well and they get their visas to israel on seperate papers, if they plan to visit an arab country afterwards. This is merely a political issue you don't recognize a country, you wont recognize its passport; a holder of unrecognized passport is not allowed in.
