What place does Sufism have in Islam? I am very fascinated by it, it is extremely beautiful.

I guess it depends on what you mean with sufism.
If you mean what many people associate with sufism people praying, calling upon the Prophet, or "saints" etc, then it has no place whatsoever in islam.
5156 Wamaa khalaqtul jinna wal-insa-illaa liya3budoon
I did not create the Jinn and mankind except to serve/worship Me (alone).4065 Huwal hayyu laa ilaaha illaa huwa fad3oohu mukhliseena lahu ddeen alhamdu lillahi rabbi al3alameen
He is the Living; there is no God except He. So call on Him while devoting the system to Him. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.7220 Qul innamaa ad3oo rabbee walaa oshriku bihi ahadaa
Say "I only call on my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with Him."3514 In tad3oohum laa yasma3oo du3aa-akum walaw sami3oo maastajjaaboo laku, wayawmal qiyaamati yakfuroona bishirkikum, walaa yunabbi-oka mithlu khabeer
If you call on them, they cannot hear you. And even if they hear you, they cannot respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will reject your idolatry. And none can inform you like an Expert.But if you mean, the spiritual way of worshipping God that many sufis do, I personally don't see a problem with that as long as you keep yourself within the boundaries that God has set up. And make sure your worship is for God alone.

I believe they do not have a place in Islam. For that matter I believe a lot of other sects do not have a place in Islam, infact the Quran says
6159 Those who have divided their system and become sects, you are
not with them in anything. Their matter will be with God, then
He will inform them of what they had done.Peace

If you check out Reza Aslan's "No god but God," he writes a nice chapter on Sufis. Sufis have an interesting take on tawhid.P.S. Read anything by Aslan. Even if you disagree with him, he is a brilliant writer and he could probably make a technical manual on screwdrivers interesting.

Can't really contribute since I don't know that much about Sufism. (I have Annemarie Schimmel's book on the history of Sufism, but haven't finished it.)
