    Peace,

It is not a question of potential, but of actual realization. "It could" doesn't mean "It did".

Does anyone here study ancient human culture that could comment on the average lifetime of a person on Noah's time?

    Nice photos btw.

      peace warner, all,

Did you go through the occurrences and Classical Arabic meanings? If so, what did you find, if anything?

      Thanks.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        Dear Wakas

I have checked the occurrences and the logic of the concerned verses.

What do you mean by Classical Arabic and in which time period was this C.A. developed? By whom? What are your sources?

If you are specifically concerned with Lexicons such as Lisan or Lanes can you kindly look up and tell me what is the meaning of al Masjid al Haram, Qibla and Kaaba.

                Salaam Siki,

Actually there is more to it than the definitions. You will realize it if you read Brother Aymans article on Timing, Dates and Ramadan on the FM main page you will find he ends his document with a question on these 2 words.

The Quran says months are 12 and it is important to have exact years. We can have 29 or 30 or 31 day months 6 or 7 or 8 day week but we can only have 365.25 day exact years.

To live thousand years is not considered the norm nor was Noah?s age a sign as with the 300+ year sleepers in the cave ?

296 And you will find them (E) the people most holding stingily and desiring strongly on (a) life/existence and from those who shared/made partners with God, any of them wishes/loves if he be granted long life (a) thousand years, and it is not with moving/hurriedly pushing him from the torture, that he be granted long life ,and God (is) seeing/understanding with what they make/do/work.

2247 ...and that a day/time at your Lord (is) as a thousand years from what you count.

2914 And We had sent Noah to his nation, so he stayed/waited/remained in (between) them one thousand year(s) except fifty year(s), so the deadly/great flood punished them , and (while) they are unjust/oppressive.

1,000 years (Day) except 50 can denote a period of 50 years.

Think of illa (minus) when telling time; e.g. as of right now?

5 min to write this post from 625am to 630am or 630am illa (minus) 5.

Therefore ? an era or ?day? illa khamseena lasting 50 years.

                  Peace

Here's a theory (copy/pasted from an older thread)

                    3)- How Old Was Noah?

"And We had sent Noah to his people, so he stayed with them one thousand less fifty years. Then the flood took them while they were wicked." (2914)

                    2914

Note the use of the two words "sana" and "3am" in teh Arabic text. They are not synonyms. God's use of words is precise, and must be studied carefully.

The word "sana" in the Arabic language does NOT necessarily mean a year (365 days), just as the word "yawm" does not necessarily mean a day (24 hours).

The words "sana" and "sunnah" have the same root. In fact, the only way you can distinguish the two words is by the stress on the .
Now we know that "sunnah" means "law" or "fixed way of behavior".

This meaning can be closely related to "sana". The latter can be used to indicate the fixed motion (way of behaviour) of ANY astronomical body to measure the passing of time in various cycles or units.

                    Examples

                    • If we used the word "sana" to measure the fixed way the Earth rotates around the sun ( law of Earth's orbit - or "sunnah" of the Earth's motion around the sun) , then YES, one "sana" DOES mean 365 days (year / &#1605

                    • If we used the word "sana" to measure the fixed way the moon revolves around the Earth ( law of the moon's orbit - or "sunnah" of the moon's motion around the Earth ), then we get one "sana" = 30 days (1 month)

                    • If we used the word "sana" to measure the way the Earth rotates around its own axis ( law of the Earth's rotation - or "sunnah" of the Earth's motion as it rotates around its axis) then we get one "sana" = 24 hours (1 day).

Therefore, when God said that Noah lived among his people 1,000 "sana" minus 50 "3am", people automatically make the mistake of assuming "sana" is synonymous with "3am" and go on to deduce that Noah lived 950 years!!!.

If "sana" and "3am" had the same meaning, then it would not have been necessary to use both words in the verse.

                    God would have simply said

                    OR

But the fact that He used BOTH words means that they don't have the same meaning.

                    Here is my modest theory

1,000 "sanas" might denote the "sunnah" of the moon's rotation around the Earth , which is once every 30 days. Hence the word "sana" here can actually mean "month".

                    Let's do our math then

                    1000 months / 12 = 83.3 years ( &#1605

83.33 - 50 = 33.333 years . That's how long Noah lived among his people AFTER the flood.

                      Peace

I do not disagree with different explanations on Sanah. My contention is on AWM which I think means an exact year. Sanah as many here suggest may be different periods and may depend on the context.

                      2 96

Yusuf Ali Thou wilt indeed find them of all people most greedy of life even more than the idolaters; each one of them wishes he could be given a life of a thousand years; but the grant of such life will not save him from (due) punishment for Allah sees well all that they do.

Wa latajidannahum ahrasan na_si 'ala_ haya_tiw wa minal lazina asyraku_, yawaddu ahaduhum lau yu'ammaru alfa sanah(tin), wa ma_ huwa bi muzahzihihi minal 'aza_bi ay yu'ammar(u), walla_hu basirum bima_ ya'malu_n(a).

I think the above verse does not say these wish a life of 83 years. Here the context means a very long period such as 1000 years (they may wish even more than 1000 years or they may not complain even for 995 years) without being specific that it is exact 1000 years.

                      Peace Nun,

I did not properly understand your explanation. Can the 300 sinin and 1000 sanah have 2 different meanings?

                        peace,

By classical arabic I simply meant classical arabic lexicons (e.g. Lane, Lisan, others), more so, than modern Arabic alternatives.

For lexicon meanings of "al Masjid al Haram, Qibla and Kaaba." most are online, e.g.
                        http//www.studyquran.org/ArabicDictionaries.htm

I do not have the time at present to look them up for you, sorry. Nor would I do so with the sole Arabic ones, as I wouldn't understand them.

My question was asking what your analysis showed on these words, if one was done, and hopefully posting it here for further study/discussion.

                        Dear Wakas
