Do you guys go to mosques and have Sunni friends?
-
I used to go to the mosque. One reason I stopped is that lately I feel like I need more alone time to think about God and prefer praying to Him by myself. Another reason is that in the mosque all I hear is 'Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad' rather than the main focus being on Allah, and I'm not comfortable with that. All my Muslim friends are sunnis and there are loads of them. My family is sunni. Conversations I've attempted on religion with my friends have gone better than with my family, who seem to want to impose their beliefs on me (I guess like most people, they believe they're right and want me on the 'right path' too). So I steer clear of talking about religion with them now. I've found friends to be more accepting in that sense as they want to have a discussion rather than a one way lecture.

OK. Interesting that your family care about religious detaila. Mine don't care except that I pray.
Did you ever find yourself in a heated argument with a Sunni?

How is it with your friends and family? Do they accept you or not? Do they understand what you believe and why?
Yes they do. Some friends even come to me to talk to them about what I believe. Lastly they asked me to group them regularly and we read the quraan. We plan this for after Ramadaan. My family is also cool about this, albeit not like my friends. The most confrontation I had was with my sister who is a fan of Metwalli al-Sha3rawi. It took me three years to convince her to read for other scholars at least, and mainly for Prof. Shahrour. Last I heard from her was that she was making contacts in Khartoum to invite Shahrour to debate with Turabi wow. She is now off with hadith after she bought the volumes of Bukhari and started to read for herself. She said to me honestly, I found myself in a situation where I can't accept Bukhari's and the quraan. I burnt the newly bought books.
Most of my nieces (mainly veiled) and nephews (the second generation) are very much into hadith. I find this very interesting. It seems that the education system is going down, where the young can not make up their own minds and want to be spoon-fed. But they know my ideas and cannot make up their minds. I, from my side, do not like to argue them into something they are unable to verify for themselves.

No one give a damn about my beliefs. France is good on this side.
My parents are from turkey, when they were young they used to follow what parents told.
My dad left the regular religion when his dad sent him to the mosque for quran studies. The imam used to beat the children who were making mistakes, so my dad stopped, and his dad agreed or something.
Now i'm free to believe in whatever i want, but thank God i didn't went in some obscure sect or something.

Lucky you. I get told off for almost every action in the (traditional) prayer because I don't do it in the 'correct' way. I've been in one or two heated arguments with my mum when I asked questions about the need for hadith and the Quran's complete-ness. That was when I was totally confused about my position on the topic and it felt like the world around me was falling apart, so my frustration resulted in me arguing back without thinking clearly and calmly.
How about you, what would your answers be to your own questions?

Very intersting topic indeed. As far as me well I am somewhat isolated and right now I live with my family. My family do not mind because they don't know much. Most are not really fanatics so i don't have a problem there. I did get into some argument with some friends, mainly Arabs. I do go to the mosque sometimes but only on fridays.
Most people are intimidated with my knowledge. But I agree with Samia, unless you show them some hadiths they don't understand where you are coming from. But I am noticing in the net there is now more awareness about some of those hadiths and its contradictions with Koran. I am still searching so I do not have strong views that turns people off. I focus on knowledge.
Its still dangerous though as the Ulema have some influence with the masses still, especially in the Arab world and they have issued various fatwas against rejecting hadiths.

No to the first question.
Yes to all other Yes/No questions
Exactly the same for me.
How is it with your friends and family? Do they accept you or not? Do they understand what you believe and why?
My very small family are non practizing westerners and i'd say they do not believe in god. Still , especially my mother had problems to accept me being a muslim. Her stand was but how can you ? You are german...lol, really not far from the reactions i had here What ? This "nasraniya" (christian) is doing salat ?
I have one hard line sunni friend, which i accept because he is pure. But he doesn't accept me as a muslim anymore after our discussions. Actually this year did not invite me for iftar... Other friends are not really interested in this. One friend really understands my position and thinks it is justified, but still continues in his old ways. The pressure from society is just too much and as a westerner in an arab society, i have a lot more freedom than anybody else.
Peace

A lot of them read the Koran in Arabic and don't know what its saying.
Lol, I always laught at those Muslims by 'culture'.
Exactly. However its great to have a discussion with them on it.
Really ?
Can you understand Quran without translations ?? Or its grammatical analysis ?I think what he meant is that all they do is read it in Arabic and get nothing out of it. For example, a lot of my friends dont even know what is in the Quran because all they do is read it in Arabic. All they know is what they are told from other people, which is generally Hadith related things.

Today I had a discussion with my brother about the Koran. He did not know whats in the Koran and what is not. Most people I talked to don't know what is in the Koran and what is not. He did not know what on earth is hadith.
Ignorance is a bliss. rotfl
You are blaming your brother as we are 'scholars" and he does not know.
Same is the case with all of us over here without exception. -
