the divine purpose of organisations
-
I have just been thinking that the divine purposes of all organistions (not faith in God but organisations that claim to be in charge of God's affairs) is to produce heretics. And in producing heretics they at the same time foster 'truth'. Thinking back on religious history, it seems that those who in hindsight we feel had the 'truth' were those who were thrown out of the organisation, killed or otherwise marginalised. And for an organisation to exist, it needs loyal members who are so devoted to the organisation they will go along with the status quo and persecute those who challenge their pet doctrines. So in that sense they can be said to be contributing to the truth by making heretics possible.

I see your point, although I personally suspect that the real motivations of those in power are two-fold to obtain and keep wealth and power. Same old story.
Saying that, there seem to be a lot of people who actually want to be spoon-fed and told what to think, too. I suppose a sense of security and belonging is achieved in that sense. A relationship of convenience, as it were.
