How much weight have you lost so far in Ramadan?

Fasting benefits
Many of the worst diseases are linked to high weight/obesity (diabetes, heart disease, high cholestrol etc...)
It's a chance for your body to rejuvenate and 'take a break'
It's a great way to detoxify your body.
Here's a good, unbiased article
Modern science is slowly embracing the idea of fasting. Researchers are now showing the magnitude of biochemical events taking place in the blood, joints, fatty tissues and organs of the body during a time of fasting. Now, don't equate fasting with starving. It's not the same. What's happening is that the body is utilizing the fatty tissues, enzymes and muscle tissue to sustain itself during this brief period of time (its been said that a proper fast can be performed for up to 40 days before any type of starvation occurs...be sure that you consult a trained doctor for any type of lengthy fast). Also, the body is breaking down all the abnormal cells (tumorous), tissues and plaque that have built up and is eliminating it from the body. The resulting benefits from the fast are that the organs and glands get a rest, the tissues are purified and renewed, the pH of the blood is balanced, the joints begin to recover and the intestines get a good sweeping.

Salam,
D'argento, that article talks about juice fasting or somesuch? If it's possible can you find one about the way we do it, as in partial fasting with no juices or water etc?
Well I eat, or at least try, every two hours. When I say meals, it can be snacks as well, such as apples. Its great for my digestion. I go to the bathroom at least 4 times a day, thats not including urine. I know of one guy who didnt go for like almost a week. Tons of fiber is great To tell you the truth, I dont really eat as much as you'd think.
Ive never heard of siesta, thats another word for afternoon nap? I always thought that siesta = a party. I think when we speak of afternoon naps, we are talking like an hour or 2. I personally am wide awake after an afternoon nap, I think my body has gotten used to it.
Oh ok, so snacks are counted as meals! I was a bit worried there D. Siesta means a nap in the afternoon but it's also taken to mean a break or something which could be construed as time to party? P

Amuslim dear Siesta is rest. Fiesta is party. You take a siesta after a fiesta.
I agreed to fast this Ramadan with my husband, since misery loves company. But I think he has gained weight. Not for bad eating habits (though eating only at night isn't typically healthy), but because I think he didn't eat well before we were maried.
The Iftars I make are healthy and wholesome, and include plenty of veggies because veggies have fiber which fills you up quickly and helps you feel full for a long time.
Suhoors involve fruit mostly. Again the fiber and sense of ufllness, and the sugar helps togive you energy during they day.
I haven't gained, but I haven't lost either. I had to slow down the exercise, from both a lack of time and energy during the times when I typically exercise.
What's killing me is the not drinking. As a Catholic, we're permitted to drink water during our fast. My job involves a LOT of talking, so handling my day without water is difficult. My personal Eid reward, I think, will be getting to have bottles of water during the day again.

Peace,
D'argento, that article talks about juice fasting or somesuch?
I don't think so...
From the article
(its been said that a proper fast can be performed for up to 40 days before any type of starvation occurs...be sure that you consult a trained doctor for any type of lengthy fast)
I think you are referring to the bottom of the article where it's the writer's plan for fasting. I.E. Just one way to do it...However fasting from sunrise to sunset is another...

I see, most of the articles I've read, never recommend leaving off water/juice etc in what they call fasting. I'll have a look through, thanks.

http//www.naturalhealingtools.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=170Great article, thanks. As far as starving, would this be equated to the Christian version of fasting? For example, when my mom used to fast, she would do it straight without breaking it at all or drinking anything. Im not sure if this is what all Christians do, but I take it that most do due to what the Bible says about Jesus?
I never thought about the reason why we have no appetite when we are sick. That sounds interesting that theres a reason behind it, and thats actually to make us better.

From the way that I saw it, I dont think he broke his fast like Muslims do. He just fasted from food for 7 days, but still drank liquids. I think that that is fairly easy to do, since during Ramadan, liquids is the hardest thing for me to go without, like Keeley.
It has its own name just for that? Siestas must be really important to spanish culture. However I wonder why it doesnt fit in with "European Culture"? That doesnt make sense as theres different traditions in each European country. Unless what they meant was to be more westernized?
amuslim, you may have confused fiesta with siesta.

They both sound the same, hard for me to make the distinction
Keeley, you are a really great wife. When I get married, I hope my wife is just as understanding as you, God Willing, if she doesn't "identify" herself as a "Muslim", but is of the People of the Book.
I havent exercised since I started Ramadan, but the main reason is because I got the Flu on the day Ramadan started. The Water gets to me too, but right before sawm starts each day, I drink tons of water. Ramadan truely makes me appreciative of food. Praise be to God for such blessings that we take for granted.

I agree, I also find going without liquids is hard since I've usually lived all my life in hot climates. If I had Gatorade (in lemon) all day, fasting would be a breeze without food . Though I'd miss the fruit.

Many cultures have this nap in the afternoon thing down pat. I think what they meant, was trying to make it more "unified European" by doing away with unique cultures or something so they have this uniform thing across the board. Assimilation into the New Europe which apparently should be nothing like the old. I don't really think it'll go anywhere yet. peace

How Catholics fast
There's a couple of different ways to go about it, based on your personal health and ability
For Catholics, fasting is an act of penance, a method that takes one of the very basic functions of our day out of our lives in order to focus on our lives and the things that need to change. Old Canon Law required fasting on Fridays. New Canon Law requires fasting/abstinence on fridays during Lent (The 40 days before Easter), and Ash Wednesday.
Abstinence means something different to us, so when Catholics say they are 'Abstaining', it has nothing to do with sex, and probably has more to do with their health. Abstaining Catholic style means not eating meat (Red meat or Poultry) for the duration of the fasting period. (Midnight to Midnight is how I usually handle it)
Fasting, also called Black Fasting, Requires not the removal of food, but the reduction of it. Either to one reasonable meal for thewhole day (This means we do NOT go to Golden Corral or any other buffet, will dodge appetizers and desserts, and won't drink alcohol) or two meals the sum of which would add up to less than one reasonable meal.
Most of us who fast also abstain, so our small meal is usually fish or veggies (or both). It's basically supposed to be enough food to keep you from passing out.
We are allowed fluids throughout the day.
As with all faith, it is the intention that counts as much as the act. If a person's interpetation of fasting is to go cold turkey on everything, then they are, of course allowed to that within the confines of what is healthy. But the Catholic church has its rules onfasting in place to ensure we don't go keeling over. Remember that we count our days in 24 stints. If we are fasting on Friday, we will not resume eating until Saturday. So 24 hours is long ways to go without something to eat.
Basically the biggest rule is do what protects your health the best. Most people only abstain during lent, and inthe Hospital it is a LOT easier to request a meal of abstention than to try to convince your doctor that youwant to fast cause God says so. I know Ramadan has allowances for health and fasting, since fasting is supposed to be a holy act.. not the last thing your ever do. many Catholics whoare diabetics also only observe the abstention.
From the EWTN Canon Website
Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.
On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. Since this was not stated as binding under pain of sin, not to do so on a single occasion would not in itself be sinful. However, since penance is a divine command, the general refusal to do penance is certainly gravely sinful. For most people the easiest way to consistently fulfill this command is the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year which are not liturgical solemnities. When solemnities, such as the Annunciation, Assumption, All Saints etc. fall on a Friday, we neither abstain or fast.
During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere, and it is sinful not to observe this discipline without a serious reason (physical labor, pregnancy, sickness etc.).
Fasting The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th Birthday to the 59th Birthday to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem contrary to the spirit of doing penance.
Those who are excused from fast or abstinence Besides those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourishment, manual laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline.

i was fasting 10 days in the summer.. lost 5 kg-s then. summer days are so long in my country. sunset was around 9.50pm! just had one meal of normal size.. but since my stomach shrunk, they got smaller every day.. and drank a lot. wasnt eating anything in the morning, because sunrise was also very early and after praying went back to sleep.. i don't like sleeping with my stomach full. and i felt great.. i also had to walk a lot at that time..
after fasting took care not to eat too much - just as normal.
now i've been fasting the whole ramadan and lost about 2 kilos - just eating a bit more in the evenings i guess.. and sweets also. didn't do that in the summer.. oh, and i'm not moving that much anymore..
but it is realistic to loose about half kilo a day, if a lot of physical activities are involved and enough fat in the body to get rid of.. it is not necessarily unhealthy.. overweight is worse!
