Found this page on Ahmad Nishitoba's website called United Submitters Nation. He says that the word used for when to break fast during Ramadan is the same used when describing when to do our nightly prayer. Can anyone who reads/speaks Arabic confirm this?

    Excerpt from article

Nowadays Muslims fast from Fajr (Dawn) till Maghrib (Sunset), this practice has been distorted long ago, and a generation handed it down to the next till this day that God has revealed to us the correct method. Fasting should be practiced from Fajr to Isha or literally from the first appearance of twilight in the sky to its complete disappearance at night.

The following verse makes it clear

Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until night. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD's laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

The underlined word above was translated by Rashad Khalifa into (Sunset) while in Arabic the word is "Al Layl = The night" which is the same word mentioned in verse referring to the night prayer. This is not a mistake on the messenger's part, but at his time God hadn't had revealed yet the correct practice, so Rashad kept the distorted one which is fasting till sunset.

So Fasting shall be from the start of dawn till the end of dusk.

Most of here are of the opinion regarding salat to be 3 or 2 , in either case there is no salat known as maghrib, but what we call magrib, Quran calls as isha (the night parayer). This is an argument in support of breaking the fast at isha which starts at sun set.

why not ? May be this practice is intact with them in its original shape , and who knows that we are sticking on with a courption, specially when if we can find some compelling evidence from the Quran itself.

              As Salaamu Alaikum all,

I think the questions being asked can also be phrased as should we fast from

              a) the point that begins the period of Salaatul Fajr to the point that begins the period of Salaatul Isha (Layl?)

              or

              b) the point that begins the period of Salaatul Fajr which begins the period of light, to the point that ENDS the period of Salaatul Isha which ENDS the period of light; so that we don't do any of the restrictions for fasting during any point of light...

I think if you go by the arabic, Layl, that this point has already been covered clearly of when it begins, etc. But I think the bigger issue is that maybe fasting is only prescribed for those performing Hajj or as an expiation of other wrong doings. Allah knows best.

What is meant by "until night"?

                until the night begins ...?
                until the night ends ...?

                .

As always you explained it very well now please help me resolve this confusion ...Fajar starts with Dawn which is sometime before sun rises so to end fast shouldn't we wait till its dark enough to call it night?

Let me rephrase when are we suppose to break fast...two minutes after sunset or when its very dark?
In summer there no dark nights here twilight stays on during night time in Uk.

                      Jazakallah Kheir

                        As Salaamu Alaika farida,

In my current understanding, I would say that you break fast after sunset. If you are also speaking of fasting during Ramadan, then I would suggest you read the following link to see what I think about fasting during Ramadan; the link isn't too long so far. I hope this helps you in some small way, Allah willing.
