about envy. I see a dude bought a PSP, i envy him because he has one and i want one but i can't get one. It does not mean i will go and destroy his PSP. Right? ???

umm... about this associating partners with Allah, they guy says that associating partners with Allah means that if a person believes that the created object has the power to benefit or harm him/her.
but wait a minute, does that mean we're all commoting shirk all the time when, lets say, eating food, putting on clothes, showering... ? because we all think those things benefit us, right?
or am i commoting shirk when i think to myself' hmm, i'm hungry and eating this food would sure benefit me, i wouldn't be hungry anymore', is that shirk, does that mean that i'm associating food as a partner to God? -

This is a very good question and one I have been debating myself actually. I will attempt to answer using my logic and understanding.
When a person eats food...this is a created object.
The food is created.
The food does not actually have the power to benefit us, what has the power is God allowing this food to benefit us.So if I think that the power of the benefit is from the food. Then I am negating that God has all power, right?
So I guess it is in your intention and how you think.
I know that the food can not benefit me unless God wills.
For example if I have diarrhea and the food is excreted before the benefit is given to my body, thus highlighting the food has no benefit, but the benefit of the food only comes with God's will.If that makes sense.
I could plug vomit instead of diarrhea and the same applies.
Hope that isn't too graphic or disgusting.

God has willed the food to benefit us. It is all a part of his bounty that he has blessed us with. But I too am struggling with this issue
I work hard to get more comforts in this life, not that I neglect the afterlife but at times I can get caught up in this money making business. What do you think? What kind of balance should a believer strike.Thanks

Kurt is right. Also I find it is a question of talent. All people have something they are good at. Some have qualities or expertise easily transformed into money others not. If you have talent to make money go and make it, just never forget that "your" money is not yours unconditionnally but to serve humanity and worship. The same with knowledge, sympathy and understanding, courage or any gift we may have. They are a test for us and we must use them in the service of humanity and worship of our Creator. If we do that our gifts become real gifts for us and others, if not they are dead corrupted meat that won't do us any good. So, if you are capable of making money it is one of the most excellent gifts, because it will allow other people to live and earn their life. Creating wealth is a most extraordinary gift. May God bless you with it and its good use.

So the food has power to benefit you because god the reality made it so. A lifeless stone or mindless rituals don't have anywhere near the same power. Remember when you get hungry, there is also a reason for that.

If you don't eat, you will eventually die. If you don't drink the same will happen. If you don't put clothes on, you will die out of freezing if in winter, and if in spring the police will catch you for public nudity or something like that.
But if you touch wood, will it do anything to you? If you don't believe in the "protecting eye" or some stuff like that, will it really harm you?
Also food benefits you the moment you eat that, but after the process of digesting, it's over. So it can't benefit you in all times like God. So you know that food can't benefit you at all times. Just like clothes they will eventually get ripped off one day or another, and you will have to change that. It proves that material has a limited use, and will get eventually changed. But God is eternal and can help you at anytimes.

I would take that to mean people who, for example, might wear their 'lucky hat/shirt/shoes/whatever', in the belief that it (an inanimate, man-made object) can bring them fortune beyond what Allah has already decided for them.

For example, I collect watches. I have a favorite watch, which I wear more than the others in my collection. It benefits me to wear a watch as it allows me to be punctual to my appointments and commitments, but, it doesn not bring me good fortune. That is Allah's power to grant or take away. My favorite watch, is my favorite because it is the easiest to read, and the most simple in appearance. However, my favorite watch is not 'a lucky watch'. I do not wear it because I think better things will happen to me wearing it, than if I do not wear it.
I believe the passage is refering more to idolatry, and worshipping/believing in (for good fortune) things other than Allah.
