Peace be upon you,
Within it?s finest components at the quantum level, all life is composed of vibrating frequency. From your computer to the trees to your very body, all matter, when broken down to it?s smallest parts, consists of no parts, but a sea of vibrating frequency. These frequencies cannot be seen. It is when these frequencies are combined to form a whole that a picture emerges.
What is most relevant, however, is that these vibrating frequencies also emit a sound. In fact, all of life is emitting sound - that is the effect of vibration, ie, a radio, your voice, a guitar, a jackhammer, the ocean, etc.
The following is an excerpt from ?the Hidden Messages of Water?, by Masaru Emoto
?In an article in the March-April 1989 issue of the Americal Scientific Journal 21st Century Science and Technology, Warren J. Hamerman wrote that the organic matter that forms human beings generates a frequency that can be represented by sound at approximately fourty-two octaves above middle C.?
So, the human body itself emits a ?C? note although it is 42 octaves above middle ?C?. Middle ?C? is heard at about 262 Hz. 42 octaves above that puts us at 570 trillion Hz. Hz, in simplest terms, indicates vibrations per second. So the human body vibrates 570 trillion times/second.
Being that the human can only hear between 15Hz and 20,000Hz, that puts our ?sound? well above what we can actually hear. Nevertheless, we do emit a ?sound?, as does all of life.
It is indeed interesting, then, that all notes fall into the 7-note musical scale. Music was not invented by man, but discovered.
Perhaps, then, considering that all of life is vibrating within this 7-note musical scale, a second look at the ?7 heavens? is in order.

As I'm sure you're aware, what we consider music is actually vibration. Let's use the guitar as an example. The bottom string on a guitar is the thickest string. When plucked, it vibrates at a certain frequency. This vibration sends ripples through the air which are then "heard" as sound, or to be more technical, the vibrations are picked up by the inner mechanisms(cilia) in our ears and translated as sound to our minds.Now, the lowest string, being the thickest, also vibrates with the lowest frequency. The next string up, being thinner, vibrates at a higher frequency, and so on.
Each sound emitted by the guitar is measured in music by something called a musical scale. The musical scale consists of 7 notes, called C, D, E, F, G, A, and B.
So, now, you might ask, why are there only 7 notes.
Well, when a frequency is higher than a "B", it becomes a "C" of the next octave. So, the cycle keeps repeating. 1 octave = one set of C through A. The next octave is the next set.Next, you might be asking, why don't the letters just keep increasing, rather than cycling.
To be honest, this is what I'm currently researching. I'm not yet sure of the specifics, but in general, once the frequency has perfectly doubled the lower frequency, it creates what is called resonance when the 2 frequencies are run together.
For instance, we know a "C" note represents a vibration of 262Hz. Therefore, a "C" note of the next octave would arrive at 524Hz.
So, it is cyclical in this sense.I hope that helped.

Isn't it interesting that the body resonates at "C", which happens to be the building block of most alpha-wave type music like Enya? Universally accepted/embraced soothing music always seems to be built around "C".

The scale is divided into notes and octaves, and well, the twelve notes of an octave, does not increase because they are the full octave.
One talks about for instance C-4 or C#4, being C, at octave 4. Adding a #, indicates the note is "flat", using the next note in the series, usually a black key. Some composers have expertly used the white keys only.
Furthermore, you may think of any multiple of the fundamental frequency of a note, say a pure sine oscillating at 100hz; 200, 300,400 etc being it's "overtones".
A pianokey struck does not generate a pure sine, but a complex series of fundamental frequency and overtones.While C-4 is theoretically the first harmonic of C-3, it is not so because they both contain complex spectra of overtones. But the overtones will overlap. And with a good piano tuner, this can sound quite nice.
Another interesting aspect of the chromatic scale, is that it does not quite correspond to the harmonic series.

just to weigh in , there are more scales that just the commonly known major "doh rey mee" scale and alot more than 12 notes. the minor scale is used nearly as frequently in western compositions. also there are the 5th 7th and 9th sub-variations of these scales among others.
your ears have to actually grow accustomed to hearing these different scales to appreciate the music. a person who grows up listening to nothing but say indian music which uses a different system of tuning will at first have difficulty liking say something wirtten in a major key like a "western" classical pieace and vice versa. then there is jazz that broke alot of the old rules people had began to tie themselves to and created something new and different still, using what came to be classifed as 7th 9th etc configurations of the major/minor scales and a lot more besides.
"Western" music divides an octave into the twelve equally spaced pitches of the chromatic scale. But most pieces of music mainly use only seven of these notes, the seven notes of the major or minor key that the piece is in. Indian music also has an octave divided into twelve notes. These twelve notes are called swaras and they are not tuned to the same ratio as the notes of the western chromatic scale. when you bend a note on a guitar, you will hear a flush of all the different notes in between the two your instrument is tuned to.
i used to think there was only 12 notes looking at my piano but then i read a piece that explained the maths behind the ratio of frequencies. looking at a piano you see a an f sharp and a g flat as being the same black note. they are on a piano but only for the neccessity of space and as a result of people's ears having become accustomed to those frequencies in their area.
the only way to hear the difference is using a fretless instrument like a violin or a fretless doulbe-bass. these are difficult instruments to play because your finger position has to be spot on. no room for error. a g flat will actually be placed a fraction higher on the string than an f sharp to play it correctly. you could get away with playing a fsharp for a gflat but someone with perfect perfect pitch could spot it. also the relationship of that note to the others in the melody you are playing will decide how your ear hears it. like-wise an e and an f flat are played using the same white note on a piano but in reality they should have different frequencies.
a piano tuner might decide to tune this string(s) to either note or a middling ground depending on the resonance of the rest of the strings on that paticular piano and which octave it is in, using a modern technique called equal temperment to maximize the use of different keys. interestingly pianos used to be tuned a different way and consequently alot of the old classical pieces sound different when they are played on a modern piano. most composers didnt stray far out of keys like d, f, c and g. you will rarely get a old piano piece composed in b flat because it would have sounded awful on those pianos and out of tune.
you could tune a piano to the the way an indian instrument is commonly tuned but i dont know if it ever has been done. it would be an interesting experiment.
if i had a couple of years spare i think i would like to learn how to tune a piano, its a skilled trade and something you have to master, even with all our modern technology. a machine isnt capable of doing it. im in the process of getting mine done at the moment. its taking part in two stages as the strings have had to relax and find themselves after last weeks work-out. its like they have a memory and just want to return to where they are used to. he's coming back tomorrow to show them where their new home is inshallah.

Forgive my ignorance but is it not the case that the audible notes are cdefgab? I mean in layman terms (me), cdefgab are the root notes and flat and # are the variants of these roots, correct? In other words, is there any note that falls between d and e for example? Or are these arbitrary representations of frequency groupings? confusedThanks in advance.

..brilliant why didnt i think of that.its just the way western istruments are tuned. c,c#,d,d#,e,f,f#,g,g#,a,a#,b all have an equal amount of space or "ratio"between their pitches as decided by somebody(ies) years ago. i dont know how or why they picked on the note "a" of having a frequency of 440hz and then designed the rest of the notes around this one. someone maybe knows. they could have started with a pitch at 450hz i think. anyway they then decided apon a series of 7 notes within these pitches to create the major and minor scales in order to produce harmonies out of them. e# could aslo be called f on a western instrument. the ratio of c to c# is the same as b to c. the reason some are called flats and sharps is just to simplify the layout. if they were all white say on a piano it would be harder to know which is which maybe.
there are notes between c and c# (as many as your ear can percieve) but they are only heard in a "western" peice when the composer decides to bend the pitch or if s/he is playing say a fretless instrument and decides to play it. none of them are any less important that any others though our ears are accustomed hearing them in that harmonic order. also as long as a selection of instruments are all tuned to one order they can play together pleasingly. different tuning systems have evolved and come into fashion over the centuries.
on an indian instrument for example. the idea in a musical composition is to listen to the melody develop and they arent taken to harmonies as "western" ears have precieved them in the past. they use a differnt set of twelve pitches, not sure of the ratio between them is . though interestingly they do also use 12. a coincidence? thats something to wonder on. i dont think they use a further system of scales to order these pitches either and their melodies tell a sort of long story as some of the their musicians have put it.
i remember thinking the exact same thing once about the "7 heavens" and its relevence to there being i thought 7 important primary pitches, when i started reading the quran cause its meaning is a bit obscure. so i still wonder about it.

if you have ever heard or played a <a href="http//uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yh2hmupkipI">theramin</a>, that would give you the best way to think of sound maybe. pitch doesnt naturally increase in defined increments. its more like a gradual slope. you place the increments where you want relative to each-other to produce "notes". call them what you like or obey a system that is already in place.
just to complicate things further for you the note c on my piano mightened be the exact same frequency as a c on someone elses but it will be close enough and around the mathematical frequency to ratio it should be (when its properly tuned). the reason being that every instrument resonates differently. when i play one note say c, actually all the strings on the piano resonate off the vibrations of that string. nobody ever really plays the bottom notes on a piano (unless they are playing the theme tune to jaws maybe) but they are there because they resonate slightly when any other note is played and gives an instrument its tonal quality. a good piano tuner listens to this resonance and tunes the piano accordingly

Thanks for the info - you've expressed your thoughts very well so no worries. Now, I understand about the gradual slope of frequency since I've been working with electronic music for a good 10 years now and we deal a lot with waveforms as well as their visual representations. As a side effect of manipulating sound late at night with my headphones a bit too loud, I've become well acquainted with pleasing and not-so-pleasing frequencies. This brings me to a point you mentioned earlier. You said that "your ears have to actually grow accustomed to hearing these different scales to appreciate the music" and used the example of someone growing up listening to Indian music. I can understand and appreciate that these tastes are acquired but I also wonder if there isn't a sort of mass appeal to certain frequencies as well as the correlation to our bodies resonating at "C". To further complicate this line of thought, a friend of mine tuned his synth to the exact solfeggio frequency of "la", I believe . He made a basic loop and then layered additional perfectly resonant frequencies over it. The end result was a sort of metronome that on the surface sounded like hospital equipment on crack, but when I let it sink in and just meditated on it, I swear it resonated through my body and the feeling was pretty unique.
I'm not sure of the legitimacy of the "lost" solfeggio scale but feel there could be some logical connection to be made - particularly if scientists are actually repairing DNA using the solfeggio "C" of 528 hz as opposed to the western "C" of 512 hz. We are, afterall, a clump of vibrating frequencies. It makes sense that sound should have some sort of an effect on us. Just some food for thought. fascinating hypothesis tay. i dont suppose you have a download of your friend's recording or a link to a stream. i would love to hear it. sounds like you guys are having plenty of fun experimenting with sound. i would love to chime in on that party. i have never heard about "solfeggio" but i am definitely intrigued to learn more. the site you linked says it was developed as a 6 or (9?) note scale. i wonder what the ratio is between the frequencies and does it allow for a system of harmonics.
i had never heard of really heard of organic matter vibrating at a paticular frequency, maybe thats what the all vortex believers in sedona AZ go on about. I cant remember as i didnt really pay attention to it. maybe the human body does resonate at 528hz or at some harmony to it. its worth investigating, i would say.
do you know what kind of synth your friend has? i looking to get one eventually but i'll have to do some research first and save.

dc2edit okay so i read a little about it on some different sites and one of them says about the solfeggio scale
Through a series of unusual circumstances beginning in 1974, Dr. Puleo has been guided into the unraveling of certain vibrational frequencies and other mysteries encoded in the Bible. He was introduced, through an open vision, to the Pythagorean method of numeral reduction. Using this method, he discovered six sound frequencies coded into the book of Numbers, chapter 7, verses 12-89. These frequencies are 396hz, 417hz, 528hz, 639hz, 741hz, and 852hz.
it goes on to say that this doc discovered a cure for cancer among other things using frequencies but got no attention for his work as a result of BIG pHARM's meddling.
