    peace to all )

3336 It is not for a believing man or believing woman, if God and His messenger issue any command, that they have any choice in their decision. And anyone who disobeys God and His messenger, he has gone far astray.

many hadith followers say i'm not allowed to think for myself.

    can someone explain this verse?

      salaam.

I view 33/36 as saying believers have no power to modify God's laws issued to us.

As for hadiths followers say we cannot think for ourselves, many verses have proved this wrong.

      peace.

          peace

well, they say we can think for ourselves BUT not on so many things, it's like, there's quran where God orders and forbids some things then there's hadith which is also revelation that puts more limits on everything,
especially when they have this 3336 to back them up, i mean you have to admit it can be interpreted in a way to show we should follow this hadith, God and His messenger are mentioned seperately, as if this messenger issues commands on his own and we have no say.

or in 597 where the prophet forbade and allowed some things that are not mentioned in the quran but it's in hadith (so they say) and we MUST follow it...

ok i can't muhammad quran talks about and muhammad hadith talk about are same person, although, imo, the one in hadith is portrayed as an egotistic arrogant person... well in some hadith at least,

but what else could 3336 mean?

this is one aya or two, how many ayas are there in the Quran where thinking for ourselves and pondering and relfect is injoined to us? Many, many times. These ayas given here, whatever they may mean, they cannot mean that we cannot think for ourselves. There is a scope for everything. If we were taking hadith x n to see how many centimetres must measure our hair or dress or when should we sit and when crouch and all that I think we should be very worried, but finally the Truthful Qur'an does not give all that many particular commands, and it says itself it is a guide, so in fact yes, when we oby God, we must think, and when we follow the Profet, we follow his teachings which are the Quran.

            Salaam

              can someone explain this verse?

When reading the Quran, any one can be confused and become misguided if does not apply a very important rule What are the DECISIVE Verses, and what are the ALLEGORICAL ones?

He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive, they are the basis of the Book, and others are allegorical; then as for those in whose hearts there is perversity they follow the part of it which is allegorical (not of well-established meaning), seeking to mislead and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation. but none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none do mind except those having understanding (3- 7).

In the previous Quranic verse, and many other verses, God warns people from following verses in the Quran that were revealed to give certain guidance in a specific situation. But once the situation ends, the special guidance should not be followed, but the original one?the decisive?becomes the law.
In the verse that you stated, such a commendent was given to the people who were living during the Prophet time; thus they had to obey him. But today, such a verse is being used to make us follow another religion that were written by people.
In order to understand this verse, you have to look for the decisive verses that explain it. The verses that indicates that the prophet followed the Quran Commandments at his time. Thus, today, in order to follow this verse (obey the prophet and God), we have to do what he did, follow the Quran Commandments regarding Halal, Haram, Hodood, the description of the Judgment Day, the Description and the attributes of our God, and so on. But when you follow the hadith that contradict the Quran commandments, you are doing opposite of what the prophet did.

                Thanks

Indeed, it is speaking of a very specific situation for which God is giving specific instructions. It is not a general rule, binding everybody in any circumstance.
