    For those familiar with physics/mathematics

    F = ma

    E = mc2

    If someone were to say to you "uphold the equation/formula/relationship" what does that mean to you?

    NB slw is a shortened version of the component letters of the root of "salat" (Sawd-Lam-Waw)

      I once tried to solve for m in F = ma, and insert into E = MC^2, but my teacher told me that one shouldn't mix einsteinian and newtonian physics...

        I was just giving examples of equations/formulas, you can use any to represent the concept.

        I guess I should have mentioned that.

                Exactly what I was thinking application where applicable.

                Not only does a formula have an application, it also contains information, even if it does not get applied. It has inherent information.

                Let's say the formula has many components, many bits of information, if someone said "uphold it" would that require having to not only apply it where applicable but also study/understand/review/contemplate upon it? I think so.

                  A definite yes to your question. I've always made an effort to understand a formula when I must use it. For example, when we were taught Pythagoras theorem about the hypotenuse, I requested proof. That made me understand maths much better, and witness another aspect of it. I've continued this habit, and not only has it increased me in my knowledge, but it has also lead me to be a able to derive many of the formulas one learns in school, on my own. I can only imagine the outcome if we applied this curiosity to slw and its mechanisms.

                        I would first check the context to see if a specific formula was being referenced. If not, it would have to refer to a known formula, and it would have to be guarded/preserved, kept in mind, protected, not broken, kept going, and any inherent information within the formula too.

                          Good post!!

                          I think I see where your coming from with this analogy and it makes sense. Still in my early days with salah and trying to approach it from a neutral angle when looking at verses.

                            Salam,

                            Take for example F = ma

                            1. Condider the basic assumption that s required in the formula i.e. the direction of motion, where the acceleration a is going.

                            2. A formula is a function. Functions has variables and also constants. Therefore, it depends on the independent variable, in this case mass m and
                              acceleration a. The dependent variable in this case is F because it depends on m and a for its value.

                            In case one variable is taken as constant, say m, then F soley depends on a for its value.

                            1. Application of the formula is next. This puts all variables and constants together to produce the result. e.g. F = ma

                            2. Finally, getting the result F must be backed up by understanding what is F, i.e. the sum of all forces in the given direction.

                            The above can easily apply to any formula you wish to apply.
