Do you recommend Jilbab ?
-
Alsalam alaikum
The word " Jilbab " and the word " Khimar " are the only two words mentioned in the topic of hijab in the Quran concerning dress , what is your understanding to it ?
We may differ in understanding of the word " Khimar " but I think we all know what Jilbab is . It's a long wide dress ( not a pant anyway ). -

Haha , No don't worry if it's long no wind will blow it , it's what we call Abaia .
Would you recommend it or it is out of fashion ?!! -
As Salaam Alaikum,
God says that he revealed the Quran in Arabic so that the Prophet would understand. So, I don't think that the Prophet would understand a word like "salwar kameez", "sari", or "komono". Therefore God probably used the word "jilbab", which is arabic, so he couuld understand... thus be familiar with.
So no, I don't question if I should be wearing a "jilbab". I mean, just imagine the next quesiton...."when is a jilbab a jilbab?" (when it is covering clothes under it? but what if someone isn't wearing clothes under it? should they wear a second jilbab to cover the first jilbab?)

I agree with you , God used a word jilbab so Arabs would understand it , but any dress similar to it would be the one God wants us to wear , I don't think wearing pants for example would be similar to jilbab.
If the jibab is revealing and the woman is not wearing anything under it then what is the point of covering our body ?!

I believe Allah gives the principles of dress code in Al-Quran for all times. Sticking to these principles is what you may want to call "islamic" dress code.
The jilbab or hijab which most traditionalists wear is simply the arab dress code at that time which is somewhat questionable as we're having to rely on hadiths/history. But nevertheless we have Al-Quran as the Furqan(criterion) so I don't see why people can't accept the rules laid by Allah in Al-Quran but run to scholars with the attitude of Al-Quran not being fully detailed for the deen. brickwall

I've noticed that when people want to go with the Quran literally they do but when you don't like a word in it they will try to find a way and say it shouldn't be taken like that or it has another meaning , like the word beat them , no other meaning to it , beat them means beat them it has no other meaning , same jilbab means jilbab a wide long dress not a pant , right ?!

peace all,
I cant help but feel the point is being missed.
Carrying on from the point I made earlier, let's actually post the verses in question to get a better idea.
The following is based on Shakir's translation, you can use any
O Prophet! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they draw near / lengthen upon them their outergarments; this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease and the agitators in the city do not desist, We shall most certainly set you over them, then they shall not be your neighbors in it but for a little while
Cursed wherever they are found they shall be seized and fought/killed/overpowered, a (fierce) killing. An important point comes to mind
Considering the harsh tone of the verses and the severity of punishment suggested, it is obvious that significant hostility was taking place.
The only times actual fighting/killing is given as a punishment in AQ is when the crime is equivalent in severity, so I think we can safely assume it is discussing things like assault, killing, rape, kidnapping etc.Questions
What if this harsh situation does not exist, do women still apply the jilbab/outergarment recommendations?
If it is a law for all women at all times, is this the way it comes across in AQ, i.e. like other laws?Notes
Do these verses imply women were allowed to go out and about by themselves even in such a hostile atmosphere? I think so.
AQ seems to be utilising a simple and practical way of allowing recognition of believing women for the time, i.e. wear your jilbab/outergarment in a unique/different way or modify it in an unique way. This obviously suggests the jilbab/outergarment was being worn by other women, including non-believers. So we can say simply wearing a jilbab is not an "Islamic" or "Muslim" thing to do. -
Salam Fajr,
Haha , No don't worry if it's long no wind will blow it , it's what we call Abaia .
Would you recommend it or it is out of fashion ?!!The jilbab can not be the same as abaia because the abaia will not cover the woman properly if she runs, jumps (like in sports), or accidently falls/tumbles, or even fights (in self defence!). Also, the woman, being the weakest of sexes, and so being seen as an easy target/prey should always be on the alert and a long dress will not allow her to work her way out of trouble soon enough to save her life. A long dress would be as efficient and handy as high heels! How practical would a high heel be when a woman was suddenly attacked and needed to run for her life!? I am convinced that pants is a basic part of the jilbab. Jilbab must be a two pieces garment, a long blouse with pants, something that could look like what the young generations now wear in Iran. This way, the jilbab would be much more practical and much more tidier than a long dress or abaia that sweeps the ground while the woman walks like a queen. The abaia is not suitable for the woman who is hard at work. There is a hadeeth that praises the woman who wears long underpants= Sirwal, under her dress. But I don't need a hadeeth to realize the importance and benefits of the pants!

Questions
What if this harsh situation does not exist, do women still apply the jilbab/outergarment recommendations?
If it is a law for all women at all times, is this the way it comes across in AQ, i.e. like other laws? From how I see it, they seem to be recommendations which are pointing to the general way of dressing of women in a certain situation, therefore to make it universal...in case a harsh situation exists anywhere like that, the women are supposed to lengthen/make more modest their garments given the situation. In case it does not exist, one might assume that one could be fairly relaxed (not to the degree one might be in their homes but still more so than in a situation as described above, dependent as dressing recommendations are on the environment).
Do these verses imply women were allowed to go out and about by themselves even in such a hostile atmosphere? I think so.
Interesting, I would agree.
This obviously suggests the jilbab/outergarment was being worn by other women, including non-believers. So we can say simply wearing a jilbab is not an "Islamic" or "Muslim" thing to do.
Agreed. One of the things I fear seems to happen quite often is when practicality seems to be missed, especially relative to linking RL in the equation. I do think the quran is quite practical and universal and not particularly idealistic.

I didn't know that Quran is so limited to the time of prophet Mohamed !! We are living in such safe world noone would ever think to harm any Muslim woman , no rape , no sexual harassment , everything is just fine because it's the modern world time not the time of the hypocrites of Madinah !!How could you be sure that non believers were wearing hijab , that would be extremely odd , doesn't sound like a rational thing to be done from non believers !
-
Fajr, perhaps if you read more carefully you would see that I did not mention "hijab" anywhere.
This is about "jilbab".
If you live in an environment where if you go out you are likely to be raped/kidnapped/assaulted etc then by all means, adopt protective guidelines. If not, then dont apply them. Simple.
-
Here is something we can try
In the UK summer is approaching. If summer is also approaching where you are why not tell your friends and family to wear thick coats when they go outside. If they ask why, tell them thick coats are protecting in winter so you think even though the colder winter situation doesn't exist, they should still adopt the protection. See how long they wait before they lock you up in an insane asylum

I see , so it all depends on the environment . So as long as there is no danger I take it off and when there is danger I put it on , for how many hours that should be , some areas here are pretty dangerous and as soon as I pass it it's safe so I think I have to take the hijab off , noone should wonder because I'm very adaptive person !!
-
Fajr, have you read The Quran? It is not about taking it on and off, the verse is clearly about modifying its wear. However, through logic/reasoning I have shown simply wearing it cannot be considered "Islamic" or part of being a "Muslim".
Also, let me repeat for the second time, I said jilbab not "hijab".
Please note, I will not respond to future messages unless new info/argument is provided.

Salaam Fajr,
If you think they have a wrong interpretation then you should study the issue and post a refutation. God Willing if you make a clear case of what is the more accurate interpretation then most will accept it. This is an open debate forum so you do not have to accept peoples views and you are welcome to prove they are incorrect. I myself don't like arguing so I try not to discuss issues that I know nothing about. But keep learning from the Quran handshake -

I have a Question
if God says "that they may be Known", which means the minimum is she has to be recognized; and if to be recognized is to be known by her "face"; then does that means that Nekab (covering the face) contradict God's Commandment "That they may be known"?Peace

I understand this verse that they would be recognized as being chaste so the hypocrites wouldn't harass them , doesn't mean to be recognized by their faces .
The word concerning the face in this verse is the word " yodneena " which means draw near . Some scholars interpret this word as Muslim women has to draw part from her jilbab to her face and they chose the face because of the word " on them " which gives the implication that it's the face because they will be completely covered and no one would dare to approach them .Jilbab is already known as long dress so to interpret it as they have to lengthen their outergarment in my opinion is absurd.
