Qur'an verse 4:127
-
Assalamu alaikum to all--
I have a question regarding the verse 4127 of the Holy Qur'an. I do not speak Arabic, so I can only go buy what is presented to me in the translations. Anyway, I noticed in the preview of the reformist's translation of the Holy Qur'an that the verse in question is traditionally misinterpreted to mean that female orphans are referred to in the context of marriage. I checked some online translations, and sure enough English translations state so "female orphans."
However, when I checked my Bosnian translation each states "poor women" not orphans. Although the orphans are mentioned in the whole verse, the Bosnian translation makes it clear that in referance to marriage it is "poor women."
So, what am I to believe?
Also, I always wondered, if the reformist translation of the Qur'an is true, how come more Arabic-natives (females) are not pointing out the obvious?
I know that the sisters have been tremendeously opressed in the Arab world, but one would think that they would stand up long time ago. What gives?

Poor women of orphan women are usually the same thing in the sense that most orphans will be poor and most of vulnerable. It all depends on the tribe she belongs to and the kind of extended family she has.
The idea in the verse is to be "qist" or equitable.
Also the verse acts as a reminder to other instruction the Koran gave regarding the matter.
That is how I read it. Unfortunantly most good independent translations probably are in Arabic reformist literature. Many have not been translated.
