Conversions often happened as a result of the heavy taxes that were imposed on non-Muslims and depending on the ruler at the time Hindus were probably prosecuted and perhaps forced into Islam. The regions the Muslims ruled over still remained mostly Hindu; this leads me to believe that there was very little forced conversion. In some periods of Muslim rule in India, Hindus were treated rather well and were free to worship in their holy sites. Sufi Islam was also rather popular among the Indians due to the ease in which it could incorporate their traditions and the similarities it held with their religion in comparison to some of the stricter interpretations of Sunni Islam.

It definitely wasn't singularly the fault of Muslims, however it was a contributing factor.

Respectfully.Muslims never spread our religion with any weapon.
Prophet Muhammad was a Muslim and during his life you can see how big was the land where Muslims lived - all the way to Portugal, entire Spain was Muslims.
That's because Islam is the truth and truth will always prevail.
Today, sadly, sunnis have corrupted Islam and created a new religion - sunnism, they have new books - volumes of hadith, they have rejected and abandoned Quran, i'm a witness to that, started practising what their imams tell them and they oppress people who think different, mostly women, they keep them in their houses.Islam is always spread with eease, it comes into person's heart and mind.
Sword only brings the pain and when the blood runs out of your body, how will the brain practise Islamic duties when it has no fuel (blood)?????Islam will prevail, God willing.

Islam didn't spread all the way to Spain in Muhammed's lifetime. By the time Islam spread to India Imam Bukhari had already made his collection of hadiths and most the Muslim missionaries in India were Sunni.

The Berbers that invaded Spain took their orders from Al-Walid who was an Umayyad Khalif, so they were Sunnis.
It is questioned that there was ever an Arab conquest of Spain. The speed of the thing itself is suspect as well as other things.
As to India, what I have read is that when Muslim conquered it it was already a long time since Bhudism had dissapeared from it. That is the India which those Muslims conquered.
