Is it neccesary to say the Shahadah?

The traditional shahadah/testimony is not found in Al Quran as a whole, and also not in terms of recite this to convert or attest to your faith. Simply reciting it does not equate to "shirk" however, as God knows what is in the hearts. However stating it is an obligatory requirment to be recited as if it is God's law, or following it as if it is God's law, then that is more dangerous ground with respect to it being "shirk" or not. Best to avoid that.
As a sidenote, "muslim" essentialy means "monotheist", and "muslims" were present prior to Muhammad. When Al Quran recites stories of the past, e.g. with Noah, it shows that "muslim" was used (more correctly, the equivalent of "muslim" in the language of Noah and his people was used), see 1072

I suppose it depends whether you reject hadiths or not. According to sahiih hadiths when people converted to Islam they would say the shahada to clarify their beliefs. Every Muslim should at the very least believe the shahada; that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammed is his slave and messenger. Saying what is already in your heart cannot possibly be shirk.

I disagree, the shahada Is not accepted by Quran, and is a total fabrication, a total nonsense. To put the name of a prophet with God is shirk in my opinion. God should only be mentioned alone. To mention the name of prophets is also done in christianity. Christian people often say, Praise be to christ, or pray to Jesus. This is shirk, and sunnies do the same as christians.
The Fake Shahadah
To profess their faith in their religion, the Sunnis and Shiahs make this declaration "I bear witness that there is no god except God and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. " (Arabic transliteration "Ash hadu anlaa ilaaha illallaahu wa ash hadu anna muhammadar-rasulallah". The Shiahs may add the words ?wa Ali Waliullah? meaning ?and Ali is the vicegerent of God?.
This testimony is called the Shahadah and according to Sunni belief it must be recited by every Sunni as an attestation of their allegiance to their religion. Consequently any person who does not 'bear witness' is not accepted as a Sunni by them.
However this testimony is not sanctioned by the true teachings of the Prophet, which are found in the Quran, the veritable word of God.
The Sunnis may feel astounded at this statement especially as the Shahadah is considered to be the foundation of Sunni faith. This is why it is important to take a careful and critical look before reaching any impulsive conclusions.
For the Sunni, the purpose of the Shahadah is many fold. For example without reciting the Shahadah, the Sunnis consider their ritual prayer (to God) as nullified. Also before a newcomer is accepted into the Sunni religion, a public declaration by reciting the Shahadah in front of witnesses must be made. In some countries converts are given a "certificate" after reciting the Shahadah to confirm they have been "admitted" into the Sunni fold. However, it is not known if such "certificates" are also a complimentary pass into heaven!
To associate anything or anyone with God is known as 'shirk', the highest degree of blasphemy, which God does not forgive. This is made clear in chapter 4 verse 48.

If you are a Muslim and believe that Muhammed is the slave and messenger of God then there should be nothing wrong with saying this out loud to others. It seems rather absurd to me that God would throw me into hell for stating what should be a fact.
There is a verse in the Quran which mentions how hypocrites would say "There is no god except Allah and Muhammed is his messenger". Even though they were being dishonest; what reason would they have to say this shahada if it wasn't in use at the time of Muhammed to swear allegiance to him.

In 66 AH / 685-686 CE, the year after ?Abd al-Malik accession (Ramadn 65 AH / April- May 685 CE), the Zubayrid governor of Bshpr, ?Abd al-Malik ibn ?Abd Allh , issued a silver drachm that bore the short shahda bism Allh Muhammad rasl Allh ("In the name of God, Muhammad is the messenger of God".
Question is when it became other than stating the obvious and obsessive as it is today.

A'salaamu alaikum and thanks for the comments. After I posted this question in the forum I was told by a family member to look at Sura 63.
"When the hypocrites come to you (Prophet), they say, "We bear witness that you are the Messenger of God" God knows that you truly His Messenger and He bears witness that the hypocrites are liars- they use their oaths as a cover and so bar others form God's way what they have been doing is truly evil. (Sura 631-3)But, if God knows what's in your heart then if you said the shahadah and mean it then is it evil?

No word evil or shahda in the verse and a difference between what was alleged...

When the hypocrites came to you, they said "We testify/witness that you are God's messenger." And God knows that you are His messenger, and God witnesses/testifies that truly the hypocrites (are) liars.
If God knows a person?s sincerity, then why state the obvious; who else to convince other than to appease others? In Qur?an it?s always God and the messenger ? never God and a named messenger.
And obey God and the messenger, that ye may find mercy. (3132)

3336-37 It is not for a believer, man or woman, when All?h and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys All?h and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in to a plain error. And when you said to him on whom All?h has bestowed Grace and you have done favour "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear All?h." But you did hide in yourself that which All?h will make manifest, you did fear the people whereas All?h had a better right that you should fear Him. So when Zaid had accomplished his desire from her, We gave her to you in marriage, so that there may be no difficulty to the believers in respect of the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have no desire to keep them. And All?h's Command must be fulfilled.

When I became a Muslim, and told my best friend, she was insistent on me going to the mosque and saying the shahadah. I wasn't sure because I had read the Qu'ran and wasn't sure of if I needed to do it to be a Muslim. I know I worship GOD alone, but is saying that Muhammed (pbuh) is His messenger shirk? I would appericate an answer.

They all entered Islam with different words, in diffrent languages, they were men and women, young and old, rich and poor, all kinds of people enter Islam.True shahada is in the chapter 3, verse 18.

There is no Shahadah ...... it means to witness .. can you witness GOD?? ... you can witness for GOD .. but you CANNOT witness Him .... look at the words, they are the same but the meaning is different.
Can you witness Mohammad?? where do you see him?? ... I do not see him or GOD or any other messengers today.
So ..... you believe with GOD alone .. to be Muslim.
you Believe with GOD and ALL His Angels and ALL HIS Books and ALL HIS Messengers and the Day of Judgement and "Listen and Obey the Quran" and ask for forgiveness from God .... to be a BELIEVER!
