All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I agree fully with that link Angel. It is all there in the Qur'an (think I read it on free minds first). Hijab, Burka etc are influences from the culture before Islam. Where the sand blown in from the desert would have seared the skin of your face. Even the Men wore Burka, its all culture. However the influence of the Arabs seeped into the religion.

My belief is if a woman wants to wear hijab, go for it! Burka, Go for it! As long as she knows its not in God's message and that it is only her preference nothing else. Also that she does not look down on women from other cultures who are just as moderate by the Qur'an but choose not to wear the hijab or burka.

          Peace

what do you believe are the minimum requirements for the female dresscode?
            please explain your answer.
            peace

            Peace,
            Respectfully.

726 O Children of Adam, We have sent down for you garments to alleviate your sin, as well as feathers; and the garment of righteousness is the best. That is from God?s signs, perhaps they will remember.

2431 And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and keep covered their private parts, and that they should not reveal their beauty except what is apparent, and let them put forth their shawls over their cleavage. And let them not reveal their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or those committed to them by oath, or the male servants who are without need, or the child who has not yet understood the composition of women. And let them not strike with their feet in a manner that reveals what they are keeping hidden of their beauty. And repent to God, all of you believers, that you may succeed.

3359 O prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the wives of the believers that they should lengthen upon themselves their outer garments. That is better so that they will not be recognized and harmed. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

            Glory be to our God.
            Glory be to our God.
            Peace. sun

The minimum requirement is to cover your private parts. Full dress code is explained well in those articles.

I don't think there are any universal requirements.
I think we'd all agree that it is beneficial for women to dress "modestly." That word means different things in different culture. I think it's VERY easy to decide what is modest and what is not in your culture/community/environment.
And it changes from place to place too (within a culture). A swim suit doesn't attract much attention at the beach but at a funeral it would.

Also, BEHAVIOR is a huge part of being modest. You can dress whichever way you like but it is ultimately the way you act that makes you modest or immodest.

                    Peace,
As we know, Allah doesn't leave anything out in the Quran. Allah says that we must wear good garments, they should at least cover the private areas and we should lengthen our garments. Allah does not say how long they should be lengthened but this really depends on our own take on modesty.

The maximum would be one of those nice-looking headscarves that are sort of see through and are about shoulder-length! But those are simply fantasies. -)

I do not think it can specifically be stated that a women should not wear this and that this one is more appropriate. I could be wrong.

You should avoid being immodest, but apparently clothing is a necessity (aside from protecting us from enviromental hazards - sun, biting cold, wind swept debri) and garments lengthened appropriately perhaps to avoid any primary significance to an immodest attire, but also be modest in the attitude and be chaste cause if you're wearing nice clothes but being all flirty with your sexiness than I think that falls in line with being immodest. Not that you cannot be sexy, cause you will be if you are anyway and you are not encouraged to go out of your way to look ugly, but to dress nice in your apparel.

                        Respectfully.

I have seen sunni women wearing hijabs and they look much more immodest wit them because of the make up on their faces and the way they put on their hijabs.
veil has a different job - on many occasionas it puts face as a target so the perosn stares at her face and cannot remove the look due to the prettiness of the face and with the eye liner she's using ......

                        Glory be to our God.
                        Peace.

                          Salam.
Personally I think dress is explain very well in the quran, bascially I think the three main things to remember
is to Cover out private parts I'll leave that to your imagination, Lengthen our garment *Nothing far too short
that when you sit down or bow down for whatever reason that your private parts are showing hence what Allah
                          said.
I agree what some of you guys said that modesty plays a huge part on how you behave. Me personally I'm not a wild
person, I'm shy, quiet and humble, although i wear hijab Only because of my mother, i would still dress modestly.

                            Salam,

As to my understanding, I believe that covering from your bosom down to your knees is the minimum requirement for women.

3355 The women commit no error by dressing comfortably in the presence of their fathers, their sons, their brothers, the sons of their brothers, the sons of their sisters, the women and their servants.

3359 O you prophet, tell your wives and your daughters, and the believing women to lengthern their garments. Thus, they will be recognised and will not be insulted.

As this verse explains...'they will be recognised' is the community in each country. People are recognised by their garments. Indians by their sari for example.

BUT, wearing sari is only possible for women in India or whomever comfortable with it.

For me, as an Indian, I do not fancy the 5 metre long material as it is not comfortable.

I am more comfortable with western style that is a blouse which goes with a skirt or a pants.

So, it should be our Rights to wear what we are comfortable with.

726 O children of Adam, we have sent down to you garments to cover your bodies, and to serve as luxury. The garments of righteousness is the best.

The word 'bodies' will again refer to our private parts mainly but since its on our bodies, so the best is to cover from bosom down to our knees.

                            Haseena
