What Is Meditation?
-
Peace,
Respectfully. What exactly is meditation and how is it different from a prayer described in the Quran, by The Exalted God The Most Powerful, The MOST Wise?
I have a discussion with a brother and we apparently can't find common ground he thinks that prayer isn't physical and that we should meditate. I ask"Then why is the prayer described so well in the Quran?"Provide proofs and the evidences from the Quran, please
Glory be to our God.
God bless you all.

Salaam,
Good question. I'm definately interested in what people have to say about this from a Quranic perspective. Based on dictionary definitions, I've come to see the two terms as synonymous when I think of the definition of salat as I understand it.
prayer (noun) - words that you say when praying; when someone prays, or the regular habit of praying
meditation (noun) - the practice of emptying your mind of thoughts and feelings (salat can be pretty emotionally overwhelming for me at times, so this "emptying your feelings" bit I don't vibe with at all) , in order to relax completely or for religious reasons; the act of thinking deeply and seriously about something; serious thoughts about a particular subject
See what I mean?

I do not believe that prayer is akin to meditation.
Meditation is a method of emptying ones mind, losing all distractions and finding peace within yourself. It is not a religious practice in modern society (to my knowledge) but a form of stress-relieve and calming.
Prayer is a method of being completely mindful of God, losing all distractions, and finding peace through God. It is also a way of pushing away bad deeds and remaining conscious of our actions as we are reminded that we are making contact with an All-knowing, Every watchful God. There are many other reasons besides but these are what I understand are key.
I do not see anything wrong with meditation as long as no names other than God is invoked for praise. But as someone on the journey to being a believer, God willing, prayer is more practical for me
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm of heart against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves; you will see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and pleasure; their marks are in their faces because of the effect of prostration; that is their description in the Taurat and their description in the Injeel; like as seed-produce that puts forth its sprout, then strengthens it, so it becomes stout and stands firmly on its stem, delighting the sowers that He may enrage the unbelievers on account of them; Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good, forgiveness and a great reward.
4829On a side note I noticed something whilst reading the Qur'an. Amen/Ameen is not mentioned anywhere. I do not know the heritage of the word, apparently it is Hebrew for "so it shall be" or something, I also heard it is the name of an Egyptian Pharoah who was a believer. It is not relevant to me, but I found a substitute to say at the end of prayer instead
Surely (as for) those who believe and do good, their Lord will guide them by their faith; there shall flOw from beneath them rivers in gardens of bliss. Their cry in it shall be Glory to Thee, O Allah! and their greeting in it shall be Peace; and the last of their cry shall be Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
1010Does anyone say what is in bold at the end of their contact? Does anyone say anything else for finality or if not maybe just trails off? Would be interesting to hear.
Peace

Salaams All,
Does one need to pray when God knows all our wants and desires- don't we simply need to do.
I do not see anything wrong with meditation as long as no names other than God is invoked for praise.
Which other religion has practiced this methodology as does Islam

I think the quran encourages setting up of a nourishing righteous relationship for development.
Just my two cents worth.
God Bless.

Salaam,
The thread titled "meditiation" started by humandesign (it's just below this topic) has some pretty deep info on meditation as it relates to Muslims. It's definately worth reading.

Peace be upon you Alen,
he thinks that prayer isn't physical and that we should meditate. I ask"Then why is the prayer described so well in the Quran?"
I didnt say prayer was meditation. In fact, Prayer in this teaching(quran) is represented by the word "dua". So when you say that "prayer" is described so well, are you tralking about "dua"?
Salaat is programming, and it is spoken of very frequently and we should talk about it more in depth.

Respectfully. Can you translate dua in English, please?
Prayer positions are also well described in the Quran.
As far as i can see, prayer is a physical thing.
Let's tlak more about it, yes.Glory be to our God.

Dua = call (prayer)
Prayer positions are also well described in the Quran.
Are the positions you are talking about related to dua?
I am assuming you are talking about sujood, however there is ample proof to show that this is a metaphoric/symbolic message pointing us to something deeper within. FOr example, there is a verse that says "enter the gate prostrating"...if we take this literally, then we will be scrathing our forheads up when entering "gates".....or the verse that says that believers, upon hearing the verses of quran prostrate...that means that ANY TIME you hear the verses of Quran and dont prostrate, you are not a believer, correct? Do you LITERALLY get on the ground EVERYTIME you hear Quran? EVERYTIME? Please think about it seriously and dont hold on to old wornout incorrect tradition. God has something better for you, what was intended for you, but has been corrupted.
As far as i can see, prayer is a physical thing.
Let's tlak more about it, yes.We shall. ;D
