6116 If you obey the majority of those on earth they will lead you away from God's path; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.

Most of the people ,at the time of islam, were the pagans ,jews or Christians ? If the 'majority' refers to jews and christians, does that mean we shouldn't obey them ? But in some verses, god order us to adhere to the words in the bible, so should we obey them or not ?

      does it say exactly that?

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        1. O you who believe, you shall believe in GOD and His messenger, and the scripture He has revealed through His messenger, and the scripture He has revealed before that. Anyone who refuses to believe in GOD, and His angels, and His scriptures, and His messengers, and the Last Day, has indeed strayed far astray.

I think that what 6116 is about is to not make the decision to obey based on the opinions of the mass society(rather than facts and proofs), because that would be an argument of consensus.

          Peace,
Obeying Christians or Jews or Moslems is not what God asked you to do, but to believe and obey his Book (The Original Torah, Bible and Quran)--Obey Allah alone.
Now, do Christians Follow the True Bible?
Do Jews Follow the True Torah?
Do the Majorty of Moslem Follow the Quran?
If they did, we will be all one nation--Submitters.

          (&#65279
Menkind were one single nation, and Allah sent Messengers with glad tidings and warnings; and with them He sent the Book in truth, to judge between people in matters wherein they differed; but the People of the Book, after the clear Signs came to them did not differ among themselves, except through selfish contumacy. Allah by His Grace guided the believers to the Truth concerning that wherein they differed. For Allah guides whom He will to a path that is straight. (2-213)

          Peace, and may God Bless

I feel that the majority of people follow what they think will make them "happy" - material goods, money, worldly things.

What is meant by the word conjecture?

The verse does not mention Christians or jews ,it could mean atheists, pagans, deist, henotheist ,agnostics, or they all combined, whatever it is, that?s not the point of the verse. The meaning behind the verse is that one should not follow/adhere to in terms of majority (the mass society), rejecting the bandwagon fallacy in other words, but obey based on facts and reason.

                  (

The word conjecture is used to translate the word "Zun".
Zan means presumption or guss. Thus, following them (following their Gusses) and not following the ultimate Truth (The Book) is what God is warrning us to not to do.
                  Peace

                    Salaams Br's, All,

Isn't the ayah talking about the people being explained beforehand, from 6108 to 6116?

                    6116
If thou where to follow those with such a disposition, they will lead thee away from Allah......

Anyway that is how i understand it.

                    Salaams Br's,All.
