My Arabic is extremely limited, but as far as I can tell the word used here is "Jumu'ah" (&#1577 which means Friday, not "Jamaa'ah" (&#1577 which means assembly. Correct me if I am wrong.

English 629 O you who believe, if the communion is called to on the day of assembly, then you shall hasten towards the remembrance of God, and cease all selling. This is better for you, if you only knew.

    Arabic 629

Also, I was disappointed to see "Salat" translated as "communion." According to wikipedia it means "prayer, supplication, petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnify, bring forth, follow closely, walk/follow behind closely, to remain attached, to contact or to be in contact" all of which seem more appropriate than "communion" which is defined as "Intercourse between two or more persons; esp., intimate association and intercourse implying sympathy and confidence; interchange of thoughts, purposes, etc.; agreement; fellowship."

      Peace,

Means Friday. Thus, the meaning is "Friday Prayer"

Salat Has many meanings in Free-Minds forum. But I follow the meaing of "Prayer".

so is the translation being actively revised? in the Free Minds Qu'ran it says "assembly" there. if the word does not mean "assembly," but rather, "Friday," then the translation is advocating an assembly that is not authorized in the Qu'ran-proper, isn't it?

My main reasoning for making this post was to see if the translation was ever going to be updated -- "communion" is a sad word to replace "salat" for considering "communion" and "salat" have no common meanings (or anything close to a common meaning) according to the sources I consulted. but maybe I don't know anything. Allah knows best.

        peace

          Salaams All,

          629
O you who believe when you hear/listen to the salawaat/discussions/lecture about good /bad things at a gathering hastening /striving/going along upon zikre/reminder/admonition of Allah and give up(227 business/barter/dealings that is better for you if you did know.
          6210
Then when is finished the salawaat/discussion/debate/lecture then disperse in/with disposition-to do good and seek from/of the Grace of Allah and remember Allah much that you may be successful.
          6211
When they see some merchandise or some amusement they disperse headlong to it AND LEAVE YOU STANDING say that which has Allah is better then any amusement and from merchandise and Allah is best of providers.

Check out the meanings of the word Jamma/Jamaat, it is found in Urdu aswell, as well as every Arabic dictionary- i think.

          And note

We all believe the quran is fully detailed right?

so where went the names of the other six days , if Jumma was the name of a day in the week.

          peace

Upon reading that literal translation, the way I now understand those verses is

people who believe, when discussing what is good or bad in a gathering should strive for rememberance and admonition of God and not give up your ideas for theirs?

That is, when discussing what is good or bad we should remember that God is the main authority on the subject and that we should hold fast to what He gave us in the Qu'ran, not abandoning it for other people's ideas, then if something bad happens we can not be guilty for it?

my understanding of the other verses
Then when the discussion is over go out and do good and seek the Grace of God and remember God much in order to be successful in seeking that Grace. People will take material things and amusement as their priority and leave us standing alone, saying that upholding our convenant with God is better than amusement and material things, beliving God will provide for us as He is the best of providers?

            So, all together now
People in groups will tend to compromise morality for profit and enjoyment, we are not to conform to their ways, but are to remember our devotion to God, that it is better than any profit or amusement, and that if we trust Him by upholding our covenant with Him then He will provide for us (so no compromise is really necessary for profit).

Is that how you understand it? For me the most important aspect of the Qu'ran is that it contains clear statements that (if read sincerely, without intent to distort) cannot be interpreted in different ways. It's important to me that the way I understand a verse is at least similar to the way others understand the same verse -- otherwise I will be inclined to think that one of us is reading it incorrectly.

              Salaams ,

Sorry my english isn't very good but i make do.

We must first learn the good and the bad things, from a lecture/ debate/ class/ meeting which emerge from the talk or counsel and, are told to, always put that into practice rather then our own greed oriented methodologies whereby we may make greater gains at the expense of others for our selves- in ways unacceptable to other decent human beings- I think.

Of course the Godly principles are preserved in the quran, and focusing or putting into practice the principle is i think remembering God also.

              Thanks.

                  Peace be upon you all,

Without getting into what salaat is.....lets just say it is something we must do, a ritual lets call it. Isnt it easier to do rituaks when you are alone, by yourself? When you are assembled with others, it becomes more "difficult" does it not? So we are being admonished not to become weak when assembled with others (work, playing playstation, etc).

Has nothing to do with any day of the week.

I don't know what it means, it's written in a language that I do not understand.

But I can tell it's not about a friday congregational prayer ritual. I don't know how they (that is, whoever says that verse advocates that ritual) got that from that; maybe they couldn't understand it either.
