        Intro
The observance of Rahmadan is obligatory on every sane muslim. Such fasting involves refraining from eating and drinking throgh the daily fasting hours, that is from the crack of dawn to sunset.

The following are the things that invalidate fasting

Willful eating, drinking, and sex during fasting hours.

The time of fasting commenses when the new moon of the month of Rahmadan is sighted and expires/ends with the new moon of the subsequent month of Shawwal. If one does not fast in the month of Rahmadan for a legitamate reason, he must make up for it after the end of Rahmadan.

        Times for fasting

        The time for the fast

Appromixatly 1 1/2 hours before sunrise a dim whitish glow appears vertically in the eastern horizon. Soon after this vertical glow, a brightness appears instantly along the horizon becoming larger and larger until after a short while it becomes light. The time for fasting commences with the appearance of the horizontal glow in the eastern horizon. The time for fasting lasts until sunset.

        Rahmadan

Rahmadan is the month of fasting. It is obligatory to fast in the month of Rahmadan for a few number of days. Fasting is done in the month of Rahmadan.

        How to fast

        1. Abstain from food, drink, and sex during the fasting hours ( daytime).

        2. When you go without eating, dont try to look gloomy as those show-offs do when they go without eating. I can assure you that they already have their reward. Instead, comb your hair and wash your face. Then others wont know that you are going without eating. Bur your Lord see what is done in private, and He will reward you. Matt. 616-18

        The 3 day fast

Fasting for at least three days in the month of Rahmadan is obligatory upon all Muslims - male and female.

        The number of fasting days

        1. Rahmadan has a total of 30 fasting days composed as follows

        (!) 3 days obligatory
        (!!) 27 days optional

        1. The optional fasting is done after the obligatory fasts.

        Optional and additional fasting

During Rahmadan it is permissible to fast for more than 3 days.

Once an intention for a certain number of days ( 3,10,or 30 ) has been formed, one should fast the full 3,10, or 30 days. The submitter has a choice of fasting for more than 3 days...

Once a muslim begins with a intention to fast a certain number of days, it becomes obligatory upon him to complete it. If he breaks it he becomes a sinner and shall have to make it up on differnt days.

If one made the intention to fast for 10 days in Rahmadan, and on the fourth day he broke the fast. In this case as well only 7 days have to be offered on differnt days so that the count may be completed.

        Absolute proof

There are parts of the fast in Rahmadan that is absoulute proof.

        1. To fast for a minimum of 3 days in the month of Rahmadan.

        2. To not eat and drink during the fasting hours.

        The way of fasting

The Quran has not ordained any specific days to fast on, nor has it ordained any specific number of days to fast except a " few" which can mean 3 or 4 days or alittle more.

If one so desires, one may fast at anytime in the month of Rahmadan ( to my understanding thus far ). The fast day commences on the first night of Rahmadan and ends on the last night. One must fast anytime within the month of Rahmadan.

The Quran does not require that the fasts be observed on the first day or any particular day of Rahmadan, the fast can be observed on any day in Rahmadan ( although it is preferable to start fasting at the beging of the month ).

        Methods of fasting

There are three methods of fasting for Rahmadan (that I can think of thus far). See below

        1. Fast consecutive days.

The submitter fasts for 3 days consecutivly ( back to back ) sometime in the month of Rahmadan.

        1. Fast by need.

Your personal situation will often determine when you fast.

The submitter forms the intention to fast for 3 days in the month of Rahmadan.

He fast for one day and then fast the other two days sometime later in the month, but he completes his 3 days before Rahmadan has ended ( i,g. before the 29 th of the month ).

        1. Fat for the whole month of Rahmadan.

Rahmadn is the month for fasting, weather one fast 3, 10, or 30 days or even two days, it is acceptable...as long as one fasts in the month.

The submitter begins his fast with the sight of the moon of Rahmadan and ending with the first moon of vthe month shawwal.

        peace

When is this "month" of ramadhan? In al-Qur'an-Majeed, it doesn't say that ramadhan is a "month", it simply refers to it as a period of time, which could range anywhere from one day to a thousand years. This "period" is when we are instructed to abstain/fast, not a particular month of the year... Where did you get your information, brother?

                              Peace,

                              Ahmad

                              (&#1637
Ramadan month is the in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment. So everyone of you witness that month should fast it
, but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful. (2-185)

Thus, the fasting is for a month of Ramadan.

Now how long is one month?

                              (&#1638

The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve
so ordained by Him in the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred; that is the straight usage. So wrong not yourselves therein and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together. But know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. (9-36)

Thus, one year is 12 months. And as we know, one year is the time when 4 seasons are completed (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter), 365 days. Thus, one month is about 30 days. And if one month is ten days, then the year would be 12 month X 10 = 120 days (two seasons only).

Moreover, the following would show the length of one month

                              (&#1637

We have enjoined on man Kindness to his parents in pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is thirty months
. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he says "O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favor, which Thou hast bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam." (46-15)

Is that how long does it take and not 30 month X 10 days= 300 days

                              (&#1636

Such of your women as have passed the age of monthly courses, for them the prescribed period, if ye have any doubts, is three months
, and for those who have no courses (it is the same) for those who carry (life within their wombs) their period is until they deliver their burdens and for those who fear Allah, He will make their path easy. (65-4)

As we all know, the woman gets her period every month (average every thirty days)

Thus, we have to Fast for one Month that equals 30 days average.

                              (&#1641

They ask thee concerning the New Moons. Say they are but signs to mark fixed periods of time for men, and for pilgrimage. It is no virtue if ye enter your houses from the back; it is virtue if ye fear Allah. Enter houses through the proper doors and fear Allah that ye may prosper. (2-189)

Thus? the mark of Ramadan month is the beginning of new moon.

                              Peace

                                      Peace.

This is not accurate, brother. For starters, how do you know that "ramadhan" was referring to a specific month during the days of Mohammed, when al-Qur'an was revealed? There's nowhere in the reading that declares it as it's own specific month. Also, you said

This is a mistranslation. It mentions the COUNT of the "shahr" being 12 in God's sight, it doesn't say the "number". If it was literally translated as "number", there have been MILLIONS, EVEN BILLIONS of "months". The "count" and the "number" are completely different things, especially in relation to numbers and time periods. Al-Qur'an is stating that there are 12 'time periods' in the sight of God - the question is how do we identify these time periods?

Also, a woman doesn't get her period every 30 days. This is referring to a specific time period (not a month) - the average menstruation occurs every 27 or 28 days. Now, if these 28 days were equal to one month, then 12 months would equal 336 days in one year, which is completely different from the annual time period we use today (365 days). So, obviously, that verse wasn't speaking of 3 "months", it was referring to a 3 time periods. And when it comes to weaning a child (food), it's not referring to "months" either. 30 months would equal, by today's calendar, 2 1/2 years! Any parent can tell you that it doesn't take two-and-a-half months to wean a child. A child should start eating solid food after ONE YEAR to intake the proper nutrients necessary to stimulate growth, the nutrients that breastmilk can't provide anymore. So, once again, God is speaking about time periods, not "months", definately not 30-day months...

And even still, if every month was a fixed 30 days, then we'd have an extra (13th) month every year, not 12. Therefore, even though the NUMBER of months may be 13, we are instructed to only COUNT 12 of them. We can't base our descriptions on rounding or averaging numbers - we can't abstain for an AVERAGE of 30 days. That would mean the number of days during the period of "ramadhan" would change every year, and this is obviously not the case. This fixed number ("counted days&quot would have to remain the same throughout the years (whether the number of days is 10 or 30, it would have to always remain so). So, this can't be referring to a 30-day month - if it does, then you're saying there are more than 12 months in a year, which al-Qur'an rejects, according to your interpretation. And since the Scripture is accurate, then the Scripture isn't referring to the number of months in a year, it's speaking of the count of 'periods' in the sight of God.

And the verse you mentioned (2189) is a mistranslation as well - this verse says

"Yasaloonaka AAani alahillati", meaning "They will ask you about the CRESCENT MOONS." The word "hilal" refers to the "crescent moon"... These crescent moons were used as a method of identifying months and time periods, and they still are used in many countries. Depending on where you're standing during the time of the new moon, you may not even be able to see it, and the crescent moon is also difficult to see under certain conditions. Al-Qur'an states

"The God wills that you shall have ease, and does not will you to suffer hardship, but that you complete the count..." (al-Qur'an 2185)

Therefore, since He has instructed us to abstain/fast durig the period or "ramadhan", He has not made it difficult to identify the period, but many are unaware. In many instances, "shahr" refers to something large or obvious, which would explain how we could easily identify it, unlike identifying the new or crescent moon... I'm not completely sure if "shahr" refers to the full moon itself - I haven't completely finished researching the issue, and I haven't finished reading Ayman's article on this topic either - but Brother Ayman's argument sounds very consistent with what al-Qur'an states. The identification of the period of "ramadhan" relies on the sighting of the full moon, and in this period, we abstain for 'a few number of days'. Referencing "ramadhan" as it's own "month" isn't based on the reading, especially considering the fact that we have no evidence that there was a month named "Ramadhan" during Mohammed's lifetime.

                                      Peace.

This is what I get out of this so far

That Rahmadan can last for 28,29,or 30 days... Thus It is not a fixed period..

                                          Does Rahmadan = 30 days every year ? ( Fixed number )

Or does it = 30 days one year, and may = 28 days the next year, and may only = 10 days the next year? ( Flexible number )

How ever long Rahmadan last, then one should fast for the whole period...If it last ten days then thats how many days one should fast and so on...

And know that the use of the additional month only causes an increase in rejection...

                                          peace
