Could the jinn be dead people who have earned jahanna and are therefore made of fire, and who in that orm can still seek God's approval?

No because Men and Jinn will be judged. Then sent to wherever. The way I understand it is judgement must happen before anyone is sent to there final destination.

But they may have been judged as men already, and as a result turned into jinn, and then be judged as jinn, and then... are there any ayas that say what happens to jinn after judgement?

Say (O Muhammad) It is revealed unto me that a company of the Jinn gave ear, and they said Lo! we have heard a marvellous Qur'an, Which guideth unto righteousness, so we believe in it and we ascribe no partner unto our Lord. And (we believe) that He - exalted be the glory of our Lord! - hath taken neither wife nor son, And that the foolish one among us used to speak concerning Allah an atrocious lie. And lo! we had supposed that humankind and jinn would not speak a lie concerning Allah - And indeed (O Muhammad) individuals of humankind used to invoke the protection of individuals of the jinn, so that they increased them in revolt against Allah); And indeed they supposed, even as ye suppose, that Allah would not raise anyone (from the dead) -And (the Jinn who had listened to the Qur'an said) We had sought the heaven but had found it filled with strong warders and meteors. And we used to sit on places (high) therein to listen. But he who listeneth now findeth a flame in wait for him; And we know not whether harm is boded unto all who are in the earth, or whether their Lord intendeth guidance for them. And among us there are righteous folk and among us there are far from that. We are sects having different rules. And we know that we cannot escape from Allah in the earth, nor can we escape by flight. And when we heard the guidance, we believed therein, and whoso believeth in his Lord, he feareth neither loss nor oppression. And there are among us some who have surrendered (to Allah) and there are among us some who are unjust. And whoso hath surrendered to Allah, such have taken the right path purposefully. And as for those who are unjust, they are firewood for hell.

The Sura "The Jinn" explains fully who they are. The Jinn are not fantasies or the desires of man. Jinn are separate beings created from Smokeless fire who will be judged as will mankind. The Jinn have the exact same social problems we do. They have sects in religion, they have unjust Jinn and they have Jinn who want to follow guidance. Only the unjust will burn in hell and the it for God to decide. The Jinn are not as esoteric as made claim, they are beings that can interact with us from maybe another dimension but we cannot with them. They can also serve man as they did with Solomon and they existed before Man Satan. We cannot speak to them but they can persuade us, and lead us astray Satan as peoples Patriach. But some Jinn are good and fear God. They are just beings like us that we have little knowledge about.

And as for those who are unjust, they are firewood for hell.

So, I do not see anything in there that makes it incompatible with the jinn being those who were human and became inmates of hell. Their new nature would be fire and not dust. To some of them fire would have brought the conscience of God and to some it would not.

This just occurred to me while reading this thread. Doesn't have to exclude other possibilities. As soemone in the thread has said, there is a variety of jinn-ness in the Quran. May be be it is some characteristic of things of a different nature that which is taken as a generic quality encompass them all and not a specific species.

Well I am using the Qur'an for my explanation. You are using guesswork. It may be you have some truth, but what you are claiming is not mentioned in the Qur'an... so it is only your opinion.

Plus God said he created Jinn from smokeless fire and Man from dust. God didn't say he made Jinn from the dust of man and the fires of hell.

From what I say. We do not know what the jinn in the Quran are, we only know so much speculation, so I am just putting forward a possibility. Those who are condemned by their deeds on the qiyama will be the burn and still live on, so what are they. Are they still human?
