My understanding regarding this is
Kitab= Scripture.(words of God in shape of a book or what Muslims call Quran or
Great Reading)
Quran= reciting or the reciter= Mohammad(Ahmad)
Umm-ul-kitab= Human(Pure) Muhammadreason for this conclusion

Transliteration
Thalika alkitabu la rayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeenaLiteral
That The Book no doubt/suspicion in it, (it is) guidance to the fearing and obeying.Free_Minds
This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.Khalifa
This scripture is infallible; a beacon for the righteous;Yusuf_Ali
This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah;QXP
Allah's Guidance is right before you in the form of this noble Book, recorded by the most honorable scribes appointed by the Messenger (8013-16). The Almighty Himself guarantees the Truth of this Revelation, its explanation and its preservation. And you will find it free of all contradiction ((482), (1037), (159), (2949), (322), (522-3), (7517-19)). Therefore, there is absolutely no question or any doubt about the authority and authenticity of this Glorious Scripture. And, you will soon notice as you proceed, that this Book leaves no lingering doubts in a seeking mind. If you remember that this is a Book of guidance, and hence, treat it as such, the hard fact will dawn upon you that this is The Path-finding Guide for all those who wish to journey through life in blissful honor and security.2185
Transliteration
Shahru ramadana allathee onzila feehi alqur-anu hudan lilnnasi wabayyinatin mina alhuda waalfurqani faman shahida minkumu alshshahra falyasumhu waman kana mareedan aw AAala safarin faAAiddatun min ayyamin okhara yureedu Allahu bikumu alyusra wala yureedu bikumu alAAusra walitukmiloo alAAiddata walitukabbiroo Allaha AAala ma hadakum walaAAallakum tashkuroonaLiteral
(The) month (of) Ramadan , which the Koran was descended in it, (is) guidance to the people, and evidences from the guidance and the Separator of Right and Wrong/Koran , so who witnessed from you the month, so he should fast it (E) , and who was sick/diseased or on (a) journey/trip/voyage, so numbered/counted from other days. God wills/wants with you the ease/flexibility and does not want with you the difficulty/hardship , and to complete the term , and to greaten/magnify God on what He guided you, and maybe you thank/be grateful .Free_Minds
A month, marked by heat, in which the Qur'an was revealed; as a guide to the people and a clarification of the guidance and the criterion. Therefore, whoever of you witnesses the month, then let him fast therein. And whoever is ill or traveling, then the same number from different days. God wants to bring you ease and not to bring you hardship; and so that you may complete the count, and glorify God for what He has guided you, that you may be thankful.Khalifa

okay, i am drawing a blank...what is "al kitaab"?
...and what is "ummul kitaab"?

Allah commands that our transactions be written down(2/282). There is also a transaction between Allah and the believers(9/111), which Allah Himself has written it down, IMHO. Maybe that writ is referred to as al-kitaab/kitaabillah.
It may be that ummul kitaab is referring to the original copy of that writ? Which is with Allah(13/39, 43/4).
In 3/7, the muhkamaat(decided/undisputed) ayaat are referred to as ummul kitaab.Al-kitaab is revealed mufassal("detailed"(6/114). The quran is tafseel("detailing" OF al-kitaab(10/37), not al-kitaab itself. Which indicates that al-kitab may be revealed through the Quran, i.e the Quran provides the details of the "contract".
The Quran was revealed on one man(the messenger), ...

alai-he 25/32while al-kitaab is revealed upon/towards the messenger...
ilai-ka 4/105, 5/48, 29/47
alai-ka 16/64, 39/41...as well as upon/towards all believers

ilai-kum 6/114, since the transaction is with all believers and not only with the messenger. -

The universe is a collection of God's words/sound, thats why all creation vibrates (verify that with science)
Al Kitaab is the universe, the collection of God's words/sound.
the quran is a reminder and points us to al kitaab as all messengers do.

Do you mean "people of the book"?
They are those who "read the book", so keeping in mind that the book is the universe, it is those who study the universe. It is the laws of the universe, which include the laws of the mind/subconcious that we must come to understand, not some statement written in a physical book, those are only there to point us back to al kitaab.
But remember, not all of them are the same (people of the book)

Sorry, I explained the wrong thing....you are referring to the following verse;
(1339) God eliminates/erases what He wills/wants, and He affirms/strengthens , and at Him (is) The Books' origin/mother.
The verse is basically saying God is the origin of the universe.
God is the NO-THING that manifests into everything. The energy/matter at rest, which wills itself into the creations of the world(moving...everything vibrates).

Um (root Alif Meem Meem) is the origin and the end where things return to. Umm Mother (umm) because she is the origin and the abode of the baby. Umma is a group of people who share the same origin and aim. Ummul kitaab the origin and abode of the Book.
