    Peace

I have noticed various translation of Quran translating the word ummah as nation. What is the definition of ummah/nation accroding to Quran?

-- Is it geographically separated nations existing at the same timeline?

--Or is it different generations one preceding another ummah/nation?

For example in the following verse it seems nations/ummah denoting to earlier generations since it says nations before you .

738 He said "Enter with the multitude of nations before you from humans and Jinn to the Fire!" Every time a nation entered, it cursed its sister nation, until they are all gathered inside it; then the last of them says to the first "Our Lord, these are the ones who have misguided us, so give them double the retribution of the Fire!" He replied "Each will receive double, but you do not know."

    Peace

    Abdullah

      Peace Abdullah,

      548 ... ...
548 ...Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation...

To me means, people holding same/similar belief is an ummat.

For example In a group of 10 people, if 4 persons are of same belief and understanding, and 5 persons are of same belief and understanding, and 1 person has different belief and understanding from both groups. These are 3 or ummat.

16120 Indeed, Ibrahim was a nation, devoutly obedient to Allah , inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.

        Then how about this verse?

Here the twelve tribes holding the same belief was separated into nations.

7160 And We separated them into twelve tribes as nations; and We inspired Moses when his people wanted to drink "Strike the rock with your staff," thus twelve springs burst forth. Every group knew where from to drink. And We shaded them with clouds and We sent down to them manna and quail "Eat from the good things that We have provided for you." They did not wrong Us, but it was their souls that they wronged.

Also this verse confirms ummah/national as geographically separated. And any nation in the world have people of different belief cohabiting.

7168 We divided them through the land as nations. From them are the reformed, and from them are other than that. We tested them with good things and bad, perhaps they will return.

        peace

          Peace SeekingTruth,

          Thank you for the aayaats.

          7160 ...
7160 And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes, nations...

If you note, is different than . Please take a look at 7159 and then 7160, it may clarify the meaning of is different than , inshaAllah.

          7159
7159 And among the people of Moses is a community which guides by truth and by it establishes justice.

          7160 ...
7160 And We divided them into twelve descendant tribes, nations...

7159 says that among the qawm of Musa is an which guides by theTruth and by it they establish justice. And 7160 says that we divided them into 12 . Do you see the difference brother?

Please take a look at different translations of 7159 and 7160.

Also this verse confirms ummah/national as geographically separated. And any nation in the world have people of different belief cohabiting.

Same word is used in 7168 also. This word might have derived from , not sure about it at the moment.

Peace and may God bless you.
