Assalam Alaikum

I've been a Muslim for almost two years after years of thinking about it. I hadn't hit rock bottom, but it was definitely time to make a change. I'm still changing and hopefully for the better. I watched the movie Spike Lee movie about Malcolm X which is what got me interested in Islam. I was also listening to Hip-Hop, and the Islamic references in the lyrics I was pulled to Islam.
I was raised in a small community and in a Lutheran Church which wasn't very beneficial to my spiritual growth. I did have some positive influences, but the majority of the people I dealt with, were either ignorant or misled me. Feel free to guess which one. After high school, I was always studying religion. I read books on Buddhism, Tao, Islam, and Christianity. I could never really decide what I was doing and even flirted with Atheism for awhile. Eventually I came back to Islam.

Salam!
I've done a good deal of reading and research into Islam and the history of the religion. I've always been suspect of the Hadiths as some of them contradict the Quran and the fact that they were written hundreds of years after Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) death.
I was just recently on another forum where Muslims were making excuses for raping their wives and saying you can't rape your wife. I can't stand that. I don't see how the Prophet would condone or even rape one of his wives. It doesn't make sense with all that you hear about him.

....making excuses for raping their wives and saying you can't rape your wife.
That is so sick. I can't believe that people even think like that.
Anyway Ali, thanks. I preferred MalcolmX's thought process more towards the end of his life in regards to his more pluralistic and egalitarian perspective.
Salaam.

Actually, after posting, I remembered the old narrative of angels cursing a wife all night if she refuses her husband. With teachings such as those as precedents, one does not need to go much further to see how rape can be seen as a none-existent concept and at the same time a perfectly legitimate activity within marriage.

Welcome aboard!
Yeah someone posted that Hadith in that forum as justification on why a woman shouldn't refuse her husband.
Sad but that is what my ex did to me. He was a hafiz. It just made me feel ill when I was talking to sister who was engaged - asking her to name top three reasons why marriages end in divorce for men and you know what she said? If a woman doesn't please her husband.

Peace AliX.
Welcome to the forum.
God bless you.
Peace. -
Salaam and welcome to the forum

Salaam,
BenderI should have been more clear. I had been thinking about becoming a Muslim for years. I never did and explored other religions until I came back to Islam and converted.
