      Salaam,

      ayaat = sign
      surat = something that informs

      I got the understanding for surat from
      964 The hypocrites fear that a suratun will be sent down which informs what is in their hearts. Say "Mock, for God will bring out what you fear."

      In a sura there can be ayaats, as per
      241 Suratun which We have sent down and imposed, and We have sent down in it clear ayaatin that you may remember.

      Hope this helps.

      Salaam,
      Bender

            Here is in what you find in the Qur'an;
            013001
            'A_L_M_R ('Alif Laam Miym Raa&#039
            Those are The Signs (al_aayaat) of The Book (al_kitaab).
            That which has been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is The Truth (al_haqq)
            but most of humanity do not /will not believe.

            salaam
