    Salam ,

I pick up the translation of this verse below from the website http//corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp?chapter=9&verse=122

Chapter (9) srat l-tawbah (The Repentance)

    9122

Sahih International And it is not for the believers to go forth all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group to obtain understanding in the religion and warn their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.

Pickthall And the believers should not all go out to fight. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.

Yusuf Ali Nor should the Believers all go forth together if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).

Shakir And it does not beseem the believers that they should go forth all together; why should not then a company from every party from among them go forth that they may apply themselves to obtain understanding in religion, and that they may warn their people when they come back to them that they may be cautious?

Muhammad Sarwar Not all believers have to become specialists in religious learning. Why do not some people from each group of believers seek to become specialists in religious learning and, after completing their studies, guide their group so that they will have fear of God.

Mohsin Khan And it is not (proper) for the believers to go out to fight (Jihad) all together. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may get instructions in (Islamic) religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware (of evil).

Arberry It is not for the believers to go forth totally; but why should not a party of every section of them go forth, to become learned in religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, that haply they may beware?

In my understanding the translation of the expression Lyatafa9aho fi Al-Deen as to mean studying religion or Islamic law is incorrect , why

Lets analyse the verse 9.122 The first sentence is commanding the believers that they should not go out (yanfiro) " Go forth " all together ; the 2nd sentence explaining by commanding them that from every troop of them a party should move on / go out , as we notice the command of ( Anfiro / Go forth ) is still addressing to the party selected from every troop , so the command to the believers is about to go forth , but they should not go forth all together at once , there should be a troop that should go forth first , yes but for what ?

The traditional explication of the verse 9.122 is saying that the troop from each party should go forth to study religion ( lyatafakaho fi Al-Deen ) , this explication is creating contradiction

--- How come a lot of verse in the Quran is commanding the believers to go forth for fight all of them -except the ones who have injury - and the rest who remain at home are blamed and are not true believers and then ask a party to go forth seek knowledge and study ? , by evidence if they where going out for studying religion through some knowledgeable men or books they will be excluded from the fight so they are counted as from the one who did not fight .

--- Notice that the verbe commanding the believers to move on / Go forth ( Anfirou ) is still used when it talk about the troop from each party , and this verbe Go forth ( Anfirou ) , is the same verbe when commanding the believers to go forth for fight

981/ Those who were left behind rejoiced at sitting still behind the messenger of Allah, and were averse to striving with their wealth and their lives in Allah's way. And they said Go not forth / la tanfirou in the heat! Say The fire of hell is more intense of heat, if they but understood.

471 / O ye who believe! Take your precautions, and either go forth / Anfirou in parties or go forth / Anfirou all together.

--- How come the messenger Muhammad the one how received the revelation and he is the one asked to teach them is among them , and Allah will ask them to go forth to seek knowledge and study religion from elsewhere ?????????????? it's simply irrational that the term ( lyatafakaho f Al-deen ) found in 9122 would mean ( to seek knowledge in religion through books or religious men )

( lyatafakaho f Al-deen ) in the verse 9122 mean having understanding in goepolitics , mean that the troops from each party should go forth seeking and studying geopolitical movement and strategy of the enemy

    • this is why the verse 9122 is ending with / (.......and to warn their people when they return to them, that haply they may beware.)

The troops from each party they will go forth to seek and study military and geopolitical movements and strategy of the enemy so when they return back the will warn the rest of the believers about the enemy and its movements and strategy , because if they go forth all together they may face a snare or a trap from the enemy , so in case they will perish all together .

So the command in 9122 is about a military strategy and has nothing to do with studying "religion" or "theology" or "jurisprudence"

So in my understanding as from the above analysis the word Al-Deen in his first basic Arabic original meaning is about socio - geo political way or system , this is why you found the root D E N / Al-Deen in the word Al-Madinah / The City , because al-Madinah / The city is a Socio-geo political system , it has its social law for social and commercial and all it's people activities , geographic borderlines , walls and weapons for protections etc .

The people after the death of the prophet ridiculize and minimize the concept of Al-deen to be only about studying religious book , and of course when they say religious book they mainly pointing to what was written during the Omayyad and Abbasid era , so you have to stay for years studying only "bab taharah " / How to clean your body ?

Hence , according to the analysis above westerns today are much much advanced in having knowledge and studying the Al-Deen , because they study socio and geo political systems of the other countries , they have knowledge about the land and the movement of its people , and that what was the troops from each parties asked to do in the verses 9122 , to examine the land and the movement of the enemy .

Any suggestion for a correct English translation of the verse 9122 according to analysis above ?

      Peace brother,

Google for NGO or Crisis Appeal and see for ourselves how the non-Muslims are living the Deen by benefiting humanity etc. Looks like any religion or nations have percentage of being right and wrong, good and bad, so that we may learn from one another (<a href="http//quran.com/49/13">4913</a&gt ... and the truth in the Religion of Islam is only the Qur'an, no Deen. Fair enough.

        Peace brother,

Google for NGO or Crisis Appeal and see for ourselves how the non-Muslims are living the Deen by benefiting humanity etc. and the truth in the Religion of Islam is only the Qur'an, no Deen. Fair enough.

        Salam Brother handshake ,

Yes doing good , doing just is the core of Deen AL-Islam , there are many government , organisation , individuals that are acting according to the purposes of Deen AL- Islam without knowing that .

Looks like any religion or nations have percentage of being right and wrong, good and bad

"Deen Al-Islam" ( following the system and instruction that Allah set up for mankind ) had no bad or wrong but people's misconception , practices and perceptions - intentionally & unintentionally - do have .

and the truth in the Religion of Islam is only the Qur'an, no Deen. Fair enough.

I think you should say and the truth in "Deen Al-Islam" is only the Quran , no religion . fair enough

I mean by religion the wrong conception of the word "Deen" .

The word "Deen" should be translated and understood as ( The Socio-political System ) , even if the word political from a etymological point of view has connection with police .

        Political / Politics / Police / ------- All this word has same connection , back to the root B . L .S , Balasa , Yabliso , Ibliss .

Balasa mean dumbfounded / in despair ( Excluded from Allah's bounty and Mercy )

This is why the one who was Excluded from Allah's bounty and Mercy was named Ibliss , known in Roman and Greek Culture as Satan / Chaitan .

From my intuition this guy is the first one to create the concept of Police / politia / politeia , it was well developed in the modern age at the time of Roman

Pickthall 1764 / And excite any of them whom thou canst with thy voice, and urge thy horse and foot against them, and be a partner in their wealth and children, and promise them. Satan promiseth them only to deceive.

        ( )

By doing so Ibliss got control over them through his men and allies , the group that was developed to be known as The Police

In in my opinion it's from there when come the English word "Please" , the term Please is a " Prayer " , is a request a demand , as you can notice it sound perfectly the Arabic word Ibliss ( Satan / Chaitan ) , you know why ?

Because they where "praying" to Ibliss ( Satan / Chaitan )

Also the English word " Bless " " God Bless You " who mean Allah will congratulate you , or have mercy on you ...this word is from the same root and the same concept and connection it has nothing to do with Allah but with Ibliss ( Satan / Chaitan ) ,

Also the English term "Bliss" , they used it as to mean happiness , felicity , heaven , Paradise , this usage is exactly the opposite of the meaning of the root of this term in Arabic , being "Blessed " is simply becoming like Ibliss ( Satan / Chaitan ) ( No bounty , no Mercy , no paradise )

It looks like someone out there was playing with the correct meaning of the sounds to mean the extreme opposite

          Salam Brother handshake

Sounds like Ibless is propagating his own deen and he's doing a very good job. I'm quite impressed. What else did he do?

          Peace.

Premise 2 Iblees only misguides the Disbelievers.

He said My Lord! because Thou hast made life evil to me
I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth
and I will certainly cause them all to deviate

One thing we know for sure is that no one knows Allah's plan.

So leave Me and him who rejects this announcement
We will overtake them by degrees
              from whence they perceive not
And I do bear with them
              surely My plan is firm
