Is it unislamic to confess or to admit sins to others?

In a recent irc chat session I was told by a sunnah-following muslim that in islam muslims should never reveal their sins to others as God expects us to be ashamed of our sins and if one were to tell others of our sins it shows that we aren't ashamed (something on the lines of this, i forget his exact words) Several others in the chat room agreed with this, and they only told me this because when I was typing about my history and how I came to Islam, i mentioned some of my 'old ways'.
Are there any versus in the Quran that state that muslims aren't to reveal or confess their sins to others?

I'm not a big fan of the concept of "confession" - but I don't think the sunni approach is right either. Hiding one's mistakes maybe practical but hiding mistakes is not a virtue in the Quran.

To God is what is in the heavens and in Earth, and if you declare what is in your souls or hide it, God will call you to account for it. He will forgive whom He wishes, and punish whom He wishes, and God is capable of all things.918-10
So He gave it its evil and good.
Successful is the one who betters it.

In my own opinion you shouldn't boast about your sins. Like when people show off about getting drunk and having several sexual relations.
But it can be useful to speak about your past sins to others to inspire them to become better people. To teach them that a sinful life isn't fun and that if they do sin they can still turn their life around. -
