Can someone explain to me the base of Ijtihad? I understand it to be independent critical thinking toward the Quran. However I've seen it applied differently by different Muslims with different views. Can someone explain to me the base meaning, and how it has been used by the various sects/philosophies of Islam?

If you ask me you should focus on the base meaning and ignore the conjecture and let God give light upon it for you through inspiration.
Compare the word's occurrence in all contexts of the recitation that you have shall, God willing, help you too.
