I am a girl in my mid-twenties (3rd culture kid), engaged to be married, & currently an international student.
I was born into a Sunni Muslim family. I grew up having a very curious + detail-oriented mind. & I am always keen to learn new things..
Also, due to my multicultural background, I have always been confused about the religion I was born into.
A lot of things did not make sense to me. I have thoroughly read about and tried to understand every major religion I came across.. Hinduism (oldest) to Baha'i-ullah Faith (latest.)
To make it short, I went from memorising the holy Quran to adapting to an agnostic belief system in a decade or so.. Quite a theosophic experience!
After that, I just turned to spiritualism due to some life changing experiences I have had. (Inspired by Buddha & Rumi.)
At last, a year ago, I reverted back to Islam. This time, I chose to go the path of Holy Quran, & with all the exposure to the knowledge of world history/politics, I, by then, had formed a very Humanitarian & Neutral perspective towards all the religions that I knew of. It was like The Creator had a plan for me to go through all these phases on my own and get to the bottom of the actual logical truth about Religion out there (the Holy Quran.)&&&, then I found out about Quran Alone movement and the miraculous code of 19! bravo
I don't have the words to explain how I felt when I found out that there are people out there with a similar approach as mine. Let's just say I felt like a child in an amusement park with all the rides to myself when I got to know about Quran Alone movement! (TBH, I still like amusement parks & I still don't find my favorite rides available. LOL!) yay
Now I also feel, I am on the verge of losing MOST of my good friends & maybe even my partner.. At times, I don't know how to deal with religiously stuck-up & ignorant yet very important people in my life! It can be quite depressing, But but but, that does not change the fact that I am very content & happy with finding my Truth! ;D muscle

Better die lonely than in a world of lies, however if you reach out you shall see that there are actually some people who go against the stream of lies with you. And many atheists are really good people too, they may just be turned off by the state of world religions from GOD. Faith is in realization and behavior anyways and less has little to do with classical worship, people have been deluded.
I suppose your fianc? is a sectarian muslim based on your formulation?
I have taken a similar path concerning islam and it has ruined my marriage basically due to my wife's heavy sectarian influenced faith. That I am very active concerning the faith with independent research and declaration has not helped either because she has seen my so-called "deviation" very clearly. She took evil-spirited measures against me.
I think you may be careful marrying a traditionally religious person unless the person is moderate and accepting.
Muslim, the word, is not exactly any name of a religion but it is an attribute of a state or condition due to the meem letter introducing the root word and mu - salam means someone (even something) who is sound/pristine literally. You probably know that shattered/broken is an antonym of sound and the mission is simply to be whole (holy). The connotation as submitter is likely a lie that emerged at some time in history, because the meaning of "aslama l'Rabb" is simply "be sound towards/relating the Sustainer".
I study the Arabic and Quran as a project in life and yielded some interesting results.

Salam! Your story sounds strikingly similar to mine. I literally went through so many religious ups and downs, but I feel like it was all part of God's plan to get me to the point where I am now. I regret nothing as it has helped me to learn more about my religion and see everything through a fresh set of eyes if you will. I'm sorry to hear that your friends and/or fiance aren't so accepting. I have learned not to really mention my current religious beliefs to people (especially Muslims) because they just don't seem to get it. Sectarian Muslims get reeeeally angry and defensive for some reason. It's almost like you insulted their mother lol. And people who are of other religions just want to put you in a box. Like you tell them that you're Muslim (or a submitter) but not Muslim like the traditional Muslims they don't know what to think of you lol.

Welcome to the believers "way".
One of the prominent themes in the Qoran is the call for unity among all believers, and the repeated prohibition of making any distinction among God's messengers and His religion.
If the object of worship/service to GOD is one and the same, there will be absolute unity among all believers.
It is the human factor, i.e., devotion and prejudice to such powerless humans as Jesus, Muhammad, and the saints, Scholars... that causes division, hatred, and bitter wars among the misguided believers.
A guided believer is devoted to God ALONE, and rejoices in seeing any other believer who is devoted to God ALONE, regardless of the name such a believer calls his or her religion.GOD bless you.

It is very interesting to note that I went through a lot of doubts as well. Like you born in a Sunni Muslim family, who hardly followed the traditional rituals etc. Then when I was still very young, I moved to America and attended a Presbyterian school and learned a lot about the old and the new testament.
Got married to a Sunni girl, who attended school run by nuns in India.To my surprise i found her saying her rosary and following the Catholic tradition. Somewhere along the lines, she decided to find her roots and her religion and one day she became a 5 times namazi and everything else that one has to believe to be called a muslim.
It went on for years. I remained what a traditionalist would call me a 'kafir' because i did not pray 5 times a day etc etc.
As a dutiful nagging wife, she continued to nag me about the religious matters and even threatened to leave me. After being harassed so much I decided may be it is time to find out about Islam.
I have been researching for over three years now and I have read the Quran now with over 12 different translation played out in front of me. A daunting task indeed but I felt it needed to be done. I also had lexicons and concordances in front of me. I also posed a lot of questions to mullahs, friends and Arabic scholars. Most mullahs answer was always, 'do not question' you have to follow this. Some friends and Arabic scholars help me understand the meaning of some of the words.
I also joined forums such as this one. Most forums are traditional belief forums and do nothing to confirm what is in the Quran and they always refer you to Hadiths.
My feeling was that if Islam is the result of the Quran, then I must understand it fully. I must be able to read it in the language I understand. God is not an Arab God only and therefore, language is not important, the message is.
The message in the Quran as I understand after a few years of research. I admit that I may be wrong but this is how I now understand it.

Islam is not a religion. During the days of Moses there was no Judaism and during the days of Jesus there was no Christianity. Therefore, during the days of Prophet Muhammed, there was no religion called Islam. The word 'madhab' is not in the Quran.

God never ask to be 'worshipped' in the Quran. It is always 'serve'. No worship, then there are no rituals.

God describes a Muslim as 'anyone who believes in one and only unseen God and does good deeds.' Please note rituals are not good deeds. God also asks people to do something that will benefit humanity.

Now, you could choose to become a Mumin and then you must believe in the Book, the Prophets, the hereafter and give from the sustenance God provides you among other things. This part is little difficult to achieve and cannot be done by simply praying 5 times a day.

The entire Quran emphasises the deeds and not the rituals.
And there are other things that one must follow but i do not see the so called Muslims following it. For example, the actual process of divorce described in the Quran, the wildlife conservation, restriction against hunting during the four restricted months, keeping our oaths, fulfilling our commitments and doing things on time etc etc.
After this research I declared to my wife that I will not pray 5 times a day in which one repeats a memorised verse from the Quran over and over and most of us do not understand the meaning of it. needless to say, it didn't go down well with her and she continues to nag me. (So whats new)

If you follow the majority of the people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They only follow conjecture, and they only guess.
The Quran is a book for all time. The above was true when it was revealed and it is true today.
Remember, you do not have to follow the majority to be right.

that's how almmight test everybody,,, when somebody start thinking and pondering over things he definnately find a way ,,,
story of Abraham,,, he decided not to believe on illogical gods,, but before revelation he knew there is some superem being who created all these things ,, and then he ask for a way towards guidance...
so everybody who is honest with themselves they will definitely give their time to solve the most complicated problem of their faith ,, as we know no task you will understand ,,, until you will read ,,,
no task can be achieved ,,, until the task will tested,
life is not a bed of roses ,,, that's why its life,,,
life hereafter is bed of roses for sure....for getting these bed of roses ,,, you have to travel through all the thrones leaves,, sunlight ,, insects,,, and yeh humans ,,, most complicated machine of making people distract..when I first time saw this site about five years ago,,, I read articles that make a lot of sense to me and honestly when I was not there ,,, my thinking was totally different from mainstream sunni thought... but when I got the references ,,,from here all of my frds family memebers ,,, they dnt really have any answers of my questions ,,, truth always win,,,
if you do debate according to quran,,, then Allah gurantee you victory...
if you do debate on other books,,, you will never get a way,,, (1400) the sectarian fight didn't stop,,, because they hold other than allah ,,,their result is infront of you...

2221 Do not marry the females who set up partners until they acknowledge. An acknowledging servant is better than one who sets up partners even if she attracts you. Do not also marry the males who set up partners until they acknowledge. An acknowledging servant is better than one who sets up partners even if s/he attracts you. These invite to the fire, while God is inviting to paradise and forgiveness by His leave. He clarifies His signs for the people that they may remember.
