A cycle is a series of events that recur (in the same order).
The "new" moon is the marker because (it follows the "moonless" night, & it is the beginning of a "new" cycle. The reason shahr has been applied to the new moon is that it announces (underived meaning of shahr) the moon after the moonless night. Because the new moon marks the beginning of a month, shahr also denotes the same.

It's from the OT - not the Torah. Check Exodus - has a lot about "hag".
Actually, if that's from the book of "Exodus" (i.e. Shemot), then it IS from the Torah. The Torah consists of the Hebrew Bible's first 5 (or in some cases 7) books, listed in the current translations from Genesis to Deuteronomy...

The root literally means revolve. Doesn't mean around a stationary object, though. Jews just march, wave palm leaves, where ever they are at to hold a religious celebration.

Jewish translations of the Bible sometimes render it as sacrifice. Dunno why.

OK... but in the "2 salaat theory" thread they told me I was wrong in saying that they were from the Torah... highly confusing.

Torah means Law. It is different from Mitzva. So Torah is certain portions in the Pentateuch.
Rambam said that the Torah contains 613 Mitzvot which is a bit inaccurate. Rambam and Rashi were always misreading the text to push their theology to the people.

Those whom if We allow them authority in the land, they hold the contact-method, and they contribute towards betterment, and deter from evil. And to God is the conclusion of all matters.

I don't know who told you that you were wrong in saying that Exodus is part of the Torah, but they obviously don't know what they're talking about... The (written) Torah, by today's canonization, consists of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Everything else in the Tanakh falls into the catagories of the Prophets or the Writings...
