    Salam.

Why is this sura the only one without BismiAllah?
Some people say that sura 8 is the longest and that's why sura 9 should be connected with 8 but i would like to see some proof before i can believe that.

    Always verify everything, right?

    Peace.

      Salam.

"Sura" is not the right word for a chapter. According to verse 982-3, al-quran contains established "kutub"

98/2-3 A messenger from God, he recites purified pages. In them are kutub established.

And according to verse 2729-30, a kitab(singular of kutub) should start with Basmallah

27/29-30 She said O chiefs! Surely an honorable kitab has been delivered to me. Surely it is from Sulaiman, and surely it is bismillah arrehman arraheem / in the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

We can see in al-quran that the chapters start with basmallah. So each chapter is a kitab, not a sura.

Since ?chapter 9? does not start with a basmallah, it cannot stand/establish on its own. So it is not a separate kitab/chapter, but is a part of kitab/chapter#8.

        Peace,
I believe this is part of the mathematical system based on code-19 in the Quran. We see despite there being only 113 Bismillahs preceding chpters, GOD one in a chpter at 2730 as bro "fahad" correctly mentions above. So the no returns to 114(19x6) and also this is 19 chpters after sura 9. I not agree with every chpter of the Quran necessary beginning with a "bismillah". This is not ncessary the indication we get from 2729-30 since the Quran as a whole can be a kitaab and not necessarily every individual chpter. Saying that there is no chpter 8&9 but tht these are one would ruin the mathemtical structure. GOD Bless!

also its the only medina surah with makki verses, 2 at the end......not a coincidence.
which is said by rashad khalifa, that it messes up all the 19 code throughout the quran.

          peace

I think we first need to agree on the meaning of the word "sura" in the Reading. I think brother Fahad has made a very important observation.

The Quran we have in our hands today consists of 114 Chapters. The traditionalists call these chapters "suras", and identify them by title names.

However, if we go back to the earliest manuscripts of the Quran, we do not find these titles. This means that they were added later.

The way I see it, a "sura" is actually a small passage that talks about a single subject or idea.

For example Why should I believe that "Surat al-Baqara" ( the second chapter ) Starts with verse #1 and ends with verse #286??

Are all these verses ( from 1 -286) talking about the subject of "the cow"??
The truth is, Chapter 2 consists of dozens of topics, and not just the story of "the cow".

Therefore, Surat al Baqara, the way I see it, is only verses 67-74 of Chapter 2.

This theory is more in line with the chapters that come at the end of the Reading ( the short ones). Each of those short chapters constitutes a single "sura" that talks about a single topic or idea.

            Proof

(And if a chapter is sent down "That you shall believe in God and strive with His messenger," those with wealth and influence ask your permission and they Say "Let us be with those who remain behind.&quot

This shows that a "sura" compromizes a single topic or idea.

            Another example

(And those who believe Say "If only a chapter is sent down!" But when a governing chapter is sent down, and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those who have a disease in their hearts look at you, as if death had already come to them. It thus revealed them.)

Also, when God is challenging the doubters and rejectors to come up with a "sura" like it, it obviously shows that a "sura" would comprise a single topic or idea, and not be as long as "al-Baqara" ( for example).

If we apply this theory to the first 5 Chapters of the Reading, we can conclude the following

1- Surat al Fatiha = The Openning chapter (as it is)
2- Surat al Baqara = ONLY
3- Surat aal Imran = ONLY
4- Surat al Nisa' = ONLY
            5- Surat al Ma'ida = ONLY

I therefore agree with member Fahad's understanding. They ( the traditioanlists ) insist that the Reading is divided into 114 suras.

Actually, it is divided into 114 Kutub ( plural of Kitab ).
But the total number of suras in it is far more than 114, because many chapters ( especially the long ones at the beginning ) contain more than one sura (topic).

            Peace.

              Peace

I recently read sura 9 and I found it to be an ideal sura to justify sunni teachings and fundamentalism on how they can justify their actions or following of the hadith books.

I can see how taking that sura independently of the Quran, will give the a wrong impression of Islam. A few question marks remain in my head over this sura and may God forgive me for that

              1. I did not feel at peace reading this sura as I did others, infact it was scary.
              2. This sura has a missing Bismillah.
              3. This sura has been a topic of controversy over 9128/9 maybe having been added at a later date.
              4. Lots of mention in this sura of listen to the prophet (pbuh), which one can use to justify the hadiths.

Can someone please help me understanding the true message of this sura. Is there a history to this sura besides what I have mentioned above? Any information will be helpful, even how you feel when you read this sura.

              Thanks, peace

              Hope
