Salaams, Thanks very much for these tips. Good timing, cos I was just wondering what to do about my exercise and fitness regime during Ramadan. Yes doing the exercise just before Iftar sounds like a good idea and I will try it, InshAllah.

Ramadan is coming up, so I wanted to open this thread for people to share some useful advice to make fasting easier. Also, share some advice in what to consume at iftar (breakfast/breaking the fast) and at suhoor (pre-dawn meal).

      Some tipps I have

      • Break your fast with water - drink a lot of it (1 liter min.)
      • Eat a salad (preferably a big one) right after the water, since the absence of food makes the stomach very sensitive.
      • Have a 20-minute break if you're full after the salad (your stomach shrinks during the fast and most likely you'll be full after a big salad.)
      • Eat fruits and proteins after the break.
      • Have a high-carb pre-pre-dawn meal (before suhoor) - this will supply your body with lots of energy for the fasting period.
      • Don't consume carbs during your pre-dawn meal (suhoor) - your insulinlevel will spike and make you crave for food during fasting.
      • Avoid sweets and junk food. If you're going to have that then it is best to do so after your iftar meal. Don't eat sweets or junk food for suhoor, as your insulin level will spike, and you would supply your body with junk that will make your fast harder.
      • Eat whole foods (unprocessed foods) for suhoor.

Tips for people who want to exercise

It is highly unadvisable to exercise during the daytime for obvious reasons.

If you want to exercise, follow these tipps

      • Exercise right after iftar before it is completely dark (especially if you want to jog outside)
      • Only drink water for iftar before you exercise, since you need to have an empty stomach while exercising. Exercising on an empty stomach is far better than exercising on a full/half-full stomach.
      • Eat a small salad after the exercise to slowly reintroduce some light food on your sensitive stomach
      • Eat a lot of protein foods after the exercise. 30g of protein before exercising is like 60g of protein if taken in within 30 minutes after exercise.

      bravo thans man!

I never have yet (not even for lent, which is the Christian fast) but I am thinking about it. It's from sun-up to sun-down isn't it?

                          Salaam

Often when we start fasting for the first few days we experience a headache. That is due to the body burning toxic waste.

So start eating, mainly fresh fruit or vegetables one week before the fast starts to detox your body also adjust your main meal time to the time of breaking the fast. And, Insha?Allah you will not be suffering from the headache when fasting.

Breaking fast with honey or dates would gives your body an instant sugar boost and drinking fluid with that would help your stomach to get going gently to the process of digesting food.

We would be breaking fast around 8 pm and dawn starts around 3.45 here... so not that bad eat

                          peace

21st. Are you asking because you want to fast? That would be great. You should ask your congregation to try it. Jesus and many other prophets and messengers fasted.

I am no longer a Sunna-rejecter. See 4:59-65, 62:2-4, 3:31, 4:156, 7:157 Messenger teaches and is to be followed and obeyed. Examples of revelation received which is not in the Qur'an: 3:123-126, 33:37, 2:187, 66:3, 62:9.

First you break your fast with a lot of water. Then you exercise. After the exercise you shold eat a salad, since your stomach is sensitive due to the absence of food. Then you should have a lot of protein and a bit of carbs. Protein after exercise is very good for the body. Carbs help with the process of the protein repairing tissues, etc.

Also note you should generally break your fast with A LOT of water - this rehydrates you and expands your stomach. Then you can eat whatever you want. My advice stay away from junk food.

I try not to eat junk food anyway. The biggest problem I think I will have is the dehydration, the lack of food wont bother me much as I don't eat much and mainly in the evenings. But in this heat, it will be difficult not drinking.

Just switch off the thirst in your mind. Ramadan fasting helps you learn self-control. Keep yourself busy with things and remember God during your fast - it helps. If you drink enough water at night, it shouldnt be a problem.

Also eat soup for your pre-dawn meal - it keeps you full.

"Muslim food traders"? Perhaps you mean "Arab food traders"..?
I am boycotting dates - since it is not a requirement and it is starting to be/is an innovation, and they are full of sugar. Why do people have to eat Arab food all the time (especially during Ramadan)? I think that's where the cult syndrome kicks in. Eat healthy - no junk, not too much carbs, etc. and you should be fine. That is best for fasting and in general as well.

                                          Peace

are dates naturally high in sugar? or does sugar get added as part of the drying/packaging process? i was thinking they were healthy cos they are a natural fruit, and supposedly high in iron, and it's what Mary got when she shook the tree while she was heavily pregnant.

Can't imagine dates (natural ones anyway) would be considered junk if God gave them to Mary.

                                          peace and best wishes

                                          ps
