Fasting with diabetes
-
I tried fasting on the first day of Ramadan and my blood sugar went up to 400 by the Asr prayer, and I felt horrible. (80-120 is normal.) I have type 1 diabetes, which is the rare type (less than 5% of diabetics), which means I am totally dependent upon external insulin to regulate my metabolism.
I believe the Quran has provided an excuse for the sick. But it makes me sad that I can't participate.
It's such a beautiful ordeal. The word of Allah becomes our food for a month.

Salaam
May God be merciful to you. Life is not perfect and you don't always get what you want but I can see how you don't like to miss out on this beautiful ordeal. Yet there are some who, due to their stubbornness, would deprive blind, but otherwise healthy, people of this opportunity.

Insulin is injected. It is not eaten. So taking insulin isn't the problem. Going without sugar after taking a shot is the problem. It can result in a coma or death. If I test my blood often during the fast and only inject enough insulin to keep my sugar below 200, then I can do it once in a while. It's very imbalancing to my system. So I spread my thirty days out over the year.
Peace.

I also have diabetes. I take medications for this and another health issue...If I fast I get sick. What I try to do is restrict my consumption during the day (in the spirit of Ramadan), and I anonymously donate to a local interfaith food pantry. jedi
