One main benefit would be not going to jail if you had accidently killed a fellow believer....refer to the topic "ramadhan"..if you had not done so yet..

      From observing nature

Fasting is used by every creature when they are ill or injured to heal themselves. No energy is directed to the digestive system therefore more can be directed to the immune system, kidneys and liver. Here is a link regarding fasting in a positive light

It's a student paper but it has citations you can use for further research and it explains it better than me.

        peace all

all good answers bravo, i like it,
i also think it's about discipline, we're supposed to not let urges control us

although, how strict is God? what if one would eat at dawn, sure it's a little late, a few minutes after it says in 2187, is that so horrible, that person will still be not eating for at least 12 hours... would that be wrong? i mean the main purpose is still achieved, controling urges, abstinence...

Well when people stop and start fasting will vary. The only reason it is so precise now is because we have global clocks and computers telling us when sunrise and sunset are. Before the believers wouldn't have this, they would stop and start fasting when they visually observe sunset or sunrise, which is not "accurate" to a microsecond. But it is not wrong neither, because the purpose and will behind it is still prevalent.

Does anyone know if the intention to fast is a requirement? If so, what if I wake up, 10 minutes after Fajr, and the idea of fasting first came to my mind 30 minutes later. Keep in mind I ate nothing. Is my fasting then accepted?

May seem like a dumb question which is why I don't support the "intention" thing to much.

No requirement in the Quran for intention from my studying of it.

The answer to your second question is that it's between you and The God and The God never wastes any effort so personally speaking I don't see it a problem if your "slightly" late after sunrise.

              PEACE

Peace and blessings be with you,

God Loves you so much and wanted to purify your body and hence the fasting days and months; they have nothing to do with religon. God ordained these to all scriptures and messages globally so that you coud get rid of toxins in your body. You don't have to do it. As the "quran" itself says you either do it, or just feed the poor.

If you count your blessings you will never finish.

                Peace, Love and Light,

Rida Almansour (Acceptance of the ONE who will Triumph),

                  Salam,
I tried searching above topic in this boards, but search is coming up with timing of ramadan.
                  Anyhow
What is the purpose and benefits of fasting?
Please post quranic references or existing discussion or just your opinion.
                  Thanks

                  Peace,
                  Respectfully.

First and foremost, we must obey The Exalted God The Most High. We hear and we obey.
The fasting helps us control eating and we focus on other also relevant things - learning.
Also, we save money, which in the end benefits us.

                  God knows best.
                  Peace.

The idea is also to remember and remind oneself to see the poor as your potential, future self - God forbid - and prevent this disaster. Right?
This is why we need to talk about these things.

                      Peace.
