Sadly all conventional answers. I thought I would get more explorative replies.

    1. Why must a person repeat a day of fasting? The Quran says nothing about such a situation. Yet the Quran says in surah An Aam that "nothing has been left out".

    2. Feed the needy with knowledge, a hungry person? A person that sleeps out in the the cold? How?

    3. The verse does not qualify regions. It speaks to "those who have belief...

    4. A pregnant lady is not sick. Did God forget to add pregancy? na oethoebiellah!

    5. Persistent cough is what remains 3 weeks after the flu. Its just that.

Are we really sure about ourselves?

You don't have to fast...Fasting is for muminoon/believers, not for muslims. There's a difference, see 4914-15

I am no longer a Sunna-rejecter. See 4:59-65, 62:2-4, 3:31, 4:156, 7:157 Messenger teaches and is to be followed and obeyed. Examples of revelation received which is not in the Qur'an: 3:123-126, 33:37, 2:187, 66:3, 62:9.

You are being quite nit picky when it comes to 'nothing let out of the scripture' and all.

2184 A number of days. Whoever of you is ill or traveling, then the same number from different days; and as for those who can do so but with difficulty, they may redeem by feeding the needy. Whoever does good voluntarily, it is better for him. If you fast, it is better for you if, you only knew.

It's very simple - you're making it complicated. Use your common sense.

                Salamun Alykum sister Farida

Please understand that I am not here to "stray" as you phrased it. I am serious to get an understanding of SAUM. And please do not label a person that is searching from the conventional thinking.

We all agree that massive fraud was committed to bring a convoluted understanding of Islam to us. We are in the process of unravelling those irrationalities and fairy tale stories to reveal the DEEN that the noblest of humans delivered to humanity.

Thus when one feels the need to investigate a concept such as SAUM, please do not castigate such a person. More emminent scholars such as Dr Qamar Zaman, Maulavi Mohammed Abdul Hassan, Ahktar Serazi and others have written about their research on this subject. Similarly, we did not brand Dr Shabbir Ahmed, Dr Badar, Prof Shahroour, Dr A M Malik on their research into namaaz.

I am of the understanding that the free minds forum are really such a place where one should feel free to question as per the instruction in surah Israa verse 36 and not be a blind follower.

Therefore such questions as raised by myself was an attempt to elicit answers that can place me on a plane of thought to research further to answer myself about this concept. Certainly we will be accountable for our own actions. These actions should thus be based on clear understanding with not a grain of doubt.

                Regards

What then does the elderly who is sick and poor do? How do they feed the needy? They will never be able to able to make it up. As for travelling, did the Creator of this universe not know that in our age we will be travelling in airconditioned cars, coaches and planes? So what is so difficult to not eat and drink and abstain intimacy with our spouses when we are travelling in such luxury?

Kindly try to understand that this is an honest attempt to get an answer for myself and my family. At present we are of those that SAUM the conventional way. However, deeper thinking in my opinion is required to research this subject.

                    Wa Alaikum Salaam brother
I am pleased to read that you genuinely want answers and I apologise for my misunderstanding. Firstly, the way I understand the message of the Quran doesn?t necessarily mean that you would agree with my understanding, secondly my suggestions are not an authority nor do I believe that someone holding a degree or a doctorate is necessarily better qualified to understand the Qur?an.
I believe it?s a matter of personal satisfaction for your own nafs.
Let?s take one question at a time, you want to get an understanding of SAUM. 2. Feed the needy with knowledge, a hungry person? A person that sleeps out in the the cold? How?
As the Qur?an reminds us to use our common sense my understanding is based on that approach. Saum means ?the abstinence? and those who have already been denied of food how can they exercise Saum ie self denial of something which not available to them in the first place?
I see the phrase,?Feed the needy? does not necessarily mean food, needs are diverge. I am sure you are familiar with the phrase ?hunger for knowledge? so if a person is not in a position to give material goods he can give non material possessions like his time for the needy, his knowledge and experiences etc. You never know this may in return give him shelter from cold too since he would give his time to those who do have money and shelter but may just need his company. His desire to do something good with his time may help him further.
Remember the quote ?time is money?, So why not spend time on those who would benefit from it?
Read this verse from the Qur?an 2219 .. ." They ask thee how much they are to spend; " Say "What is beyond your NEEDs." Thus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs In order that ye may consider-
Now this is seen by many as a question in relation to spending money only and this part of the verse is not pondered uponIn order that ye may consider-
I will share with you my situation; Alhumdulilah beside money I also have spare time which I volunteer for a charity for homeless, and we desperately need more volunteers to act as a pressure group to promote and discuss the issues etc but the concept of giving time as a charity, especially among Asians, is nonexistent. Therefore none come forward; instead they spend their spare time aimlessly on things which harm rather than benefit humanity.

So I do sincerely believe that all our relationship with God is personal and, at the end of the day, one needs to consider carefully all sides of a concept and then check it with our own self if that is indeed a satisfactory response. You have raised some very good questions and discussing it with us on the forum is an excellent way of sharing, but for answers do not expect others to consider it for you. Instead take this approachThus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs In order that ye may consider-

                    1. The verse does not qualify regions. It speaks to "those who have belief...
                      Of course it is aimed at the believers and only they would be concerned about their fasting. So study 2185 in sections;
                      Free_Minds
A month, marked by heat, in which the Qur'an was revealed; as a guide to the people and a clarification of the guidance and the criterion.
Since we have the criteria for a day?s fasting and obviously a believer, living in the north, cannot determine fasting times due to the fact that they experience 6 months of light and 6 months of darkness. Right?
Now read onTherefore, whoever of you witnesses the month, then let him fast therein. Ask yourself are the believers of that region witnessing the time/month of fasting as prescribed by God? If not do they come under the category of those who witnessed the month of Ramadan? My answer to this is that they are exempt from fasting as you would read on that God wants to bring you ease and not to bring you hardship
                      Next
And whoever is ill or traveling, then the same number from different days. God wants to bring you ease and not to bring you hardship; very simple no hardship for those who are ill as well as for those who are travelling as time difference while travelling, even with most comfort means, could interfere with criteria of the fast and this could cause confusion/hardship. Allah(swt) in his mercy allows us this concession to make it up later and so that you may complete the count, and glorify God for what He has guided you, that you may be thankful.

                    2. A pregnant lady is not sick. Did God forget to add pregancy? na oethoebiellah
Think of the reply I gave to you earlier and pay attention to the verse 4615 which has been discussed on this forum and I learned that the period of thirty months include time of pregnancy in it and she is already feeding the needy ?the infant? ... In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months
Now I leave you to work out this yourself Q 5Persistent cough is what remains 3 weeks after the flu. It?s just that. . As not ?we? but YOU have to be really sure about it..
                      All the best peace

                      1. Yes, you would have broken the fast, right

                      2. whatever good that person does on purpose can be counted as expiation

                      3. nowadays that is easy, you can have the athan on you computer or cell phone if you have them or purchase a salat/fasting calender

                      4. I will excuse the thoughtlessness of that question! They baby is not fasting! Wow!

5.If your illness prevents you from fasting......take the medicine
                      Peace
