What is the way of life for the Ummi and People of the Book?
I don't know what Ummi means, but concerning the People of the Book - are you talking about those of the Book who believe, or disbelieve?

I believe people of the Book are the ones who argue endlessly about truth, the ignorant.

Like the root of that word would mean unlettered, it is the same that you use for Ummah and refers to something or someone's origin. Your brethren because they are of your kin. The same root is used to say mother too, because you come out of her.
is just a form of that root.
